I have a Remington 700 in 308 and it currently only has a 20moa rail, I am thinking about putting a Bushnell 10x40 on it for now until I figure out what I want to do with this thing. What height scope rings should I be looking for? Would low fit or should I go medium?

Thanks

Do you have or will you have an adjustable cheek rest?

If yes, then higher is better since it will allow you to align to the optic regardless of height.

If you do not have adjustable cheek rest, then you generaly want the lowest the scope rings that the objective lens will allow.

Some people think lower is better for trajectory reasons, but that is pure nonsense. Lower is just more ergonomic if you have a traditional rifle with a low comb and no adjustable cheek rest or butt plate.

The important thing is that the rifle mounts ergonomically to the eye with your cheek on the stock when the rifle is held in your expected shooting position.

If you have both an adjustable cheek and vertically adjustable butt pad, then a higher scope will lower the axis of bore and reduce muzzle jump. In this case a higher scope is actually beneficial.

No real way to answer that question. It will vary from person to person. Unless you are going with the rule to mount and low as possible. But low is possible is not as comfortable as possible more often than not. If you only hunt and take a few shots a year no big deal. If you shoot several thousand rounds a year and spend hours and hours per month on the gun then better make sure its comfortable enough to fall asleep on.

I set up enough guns I keep cheap assed garbage rings of all different mounting heights to see what works best for me personally. Only way to really know is to try.
