Lookiong at picking one of these up in .223, anyone have experience with one?... I have an SPS in .30-06 I use for deer which I really like but have never handled the varmint stock with heavy barrel..... thoughts or experiences?....

I had one, used it for coyotes. I really liked it. The stock was a little flimsy but for what I was using it for it worked fine. I would get MOA no prob at 100 yards with the Hornady 55 grain. I shot 2 coyotes with it, both at just over 200 yards and they dropped where they stood. I have since sold it to a friend who bedded it in a B&C stock and it is a tack driver. For the money I think it is a geat gun.
I have one in 204 that I put in a Boyds laminate thumb hole stock. Very accurate and reliable. The plastic stock is functional but I prefer the boyd better for looks and feel. Both have the expanded forearm that is handy for the bench.
The down side for me is the weight and 26" barrel. It is not an easy rifle to carry by a sling as if flops to the side. However, if you are bench shooting it is a cannon and stays in place very well. So if you don't have to do a lot of walking and plan to use it from the bench, it would be a good choice.

I am really more of a winchester white box kinda guy...lol.... I am thinking of buying the rifle for the action and dropping it in a nice Boyd's pepper laminate thumbhole stock....

Trust me... if the glass comes up before the rifle it will be mine... Trick to getting something good is knowing what you want and getting it piece by piece when a deal pops up....
What do you mean Gary?.... You know I like Redfields.... admittedly not high end... but would like your recommendations... I was thinking Leupold since I like the Redfield line... Zeiss / swarovsky is out of my budget for a varmint gun....

I think all of the current 700's in 223 are 1-12 except for a tactical one. Another option is buying the regular sps and putting on a new barrel of your choice. A model 7 predator comes 1-9.
I think the 700 long range rig would be nice to see in a fast twist myself.

SPS Tactical and SPS XCR Tactical long range both have 9" twist.
Yep.... they are on the short list.... most of my coyote spots are limited to a max of 300 yards and I am far more likely to have a yote bust out over my shoulder than appear 300 yards away.... ao I am looking at something 4-12.... keeping open mind on that though...
Short list includes Nikon, Leupold, Vortex... the usuals... no bushnell or simmons etc....
I bought one three years ago. The rifle shot excellent, right out of the box. It has a 1:12 twist and I have developed some excellent loads for it. I wanted a tighter grouping, so I removed the tupperware stock for a Hogue stock. My groups at 100 yards (and ideal shooting day) were touching. One almost went through the same hole! It is one sweet rifle.
