So I just clicked on the Precision Rifle section of the EE and out of the top 13 ads, 9 of them are people looking to sell their Remington 700's in various models.

I'm just curious why there always seems to be SO many of these guns for sale on the EE? Do people not like them once they have them?

I wasn't overly impressed with my LTR. The biggest problem I have with Remington is that it comes just as a basic rifle. If you want a box mag, you have to add it. If you want and oversized bolt handle, you have to add it and the list go's on and on it (so does the cost). They cost just as much as other rifle (Savage for example) but with no frills. The Savage come with that stuff (ok granted there mags are not the best but it's at least a mag) and generally cheaper than the Remington. The shear cost of owning a Remington is what drove me away. Now it's time for all the Rem kool aid drinkers to jump all over me :)

There are a lot of Rem precision/varmint rifles out there, therefore there are a lot of them for sale at any one time. - dan

That's true, but I would think that there would be just as many Savage precision / varmint rifles out there and I hardly ever see them for sale on the EE.

Darn, I looking for a SA RH BDL action from the 80's and 90's and not the current SPS finished fun. I cannot find any of those. People are hanging on to them too much. LOL :D

Cheers,
Barney

The percentage of Remington vs other makes is a very high number , it is just the odds.

Since it is the platform with the most available accessories and the most popular action for smiths it is inevitable.

I's almost say that 9 out of 13 is an accurate percentage.

Nothing wrong with them.

Well, there is premium used car lots and then there is "salvage" yards. People sell rifles for alot of different reasons and the EE is always changing. :p

They get them and realize that they don't stand up to the old reliability that remigton built their name on and want to unload them for what they paid for them so they can buy a custom built or Savage rifle LOL

If they sell them cheap enough, they make a great platform for custom guns.

I have a 300 AAC Blackout SBR and a 6.5x55 custom. Both from Northshore Barrels.

I sold mine back to the gun shop I got it because it liked to fire on occasion when the bolt was being cammed down. Remington tried to fix it but it still did it. No, we didn't have our finger on the trigger when it happened either. Remington is really putting out poor quality these days as well. There are many Remington's out there, Remington's are the Chrysler mini van of the gun world.

Strange... I just picked up a like new 700 SPS DM in 30-06 at the Calgary gun show for a beater hunting rifle... It's shooting 180gr win PP around MOA and the trigger on it is better then any of the last 6 non-accutrigger savages I have owned...

Mind you to accurize a gremlington you need to have some serious smithing tools... With a savage you just swap parts with a flat screw driver and a pipe wrench.

Rem 700s are by far the most popular action with which to build a custom precsiion rifle. More stocks, triggers, bases, speed lock kits and bottom metal. They work!

There's a good market for them and they don't go for particularly cheap or blowout prices either. I just built my target rifle based off a Rem700 receiver. The rest is aftermarket.

Most fishing lures catch more fishermen than they will ever catch fish. I think the same goes for rifles.

Guys buy or build rifles that they think at the time will be just awesome. When they get it they are impressed with it for a while and one day realize it has some undesirable feature. My informal observation is 3 popular shortcomings.
1) Short barrel
2) Large caliber such as 300 win mag
3) No adjustable cheek piece.

The owner then realizes that he can just sell the rifle to some other naive guy and get most of his money out so he can put the cash toward what he now knows he should have bought in the first place.

I see this with Sako TRGs, you will almost never see one for sale in 308 but there is always a 300 win mag for sale. Reason being, nobody likes to shoot a 300 win mag because it’s loud, expensive to shoot and it hurts.

Same deal when out house hunting. When you find a nice neighborhood there is never a house for sale. When you find a neighborhood with many homes for sale, there is always something wrong with living in the area.

So when you see a rifle for sale, ask yourself why and the answer is often quite clear.

I have older 700 in 7mm RM. it is in great shape and I installed a 2lb Timney trigger that I purchased used of the EE. Very nice/solid unit overall. I held/operated a new one at Cabelas - hard to believe that was supposed to be the same gun.
