This weekend I was sighting in my new to me reminton 700ML for the up coming deer season when I went to fire the rifle off, and boom and just after a sharp pain in my thumb... I am too used to my F/tr rifle and had my thumb sitting right up behind the bolt on the 700 the fireing pin instead of staying forward somehow blew back it cracked and broke my finger nail about 1/4" and left me with a nice blood blister under the the nail...

It seems to me like it might be some how over pressureing and blowing the shotgun primer back which intern blows the fireing pin back with a enough force to hurt you....

I am using hornadys 50 cal sabots and SST bullets which are the right caliber for the gun... I am also noticing after the second shot they are getting hard to push down the barrel and even on a clean barrel they seem to be really hard to get started... once they are 6-8" in the barrel it seems to be much easier to push them to the bottem...

I guess I should get it infront of the chrony to find out whats going on... I think I know what is going on but I am wonder if anyone else here has expereinced a similar thing with there remington 700ML... seems kinda stupid that you have to clean it in between every shot... well see this year if it can redeem its self or else ill be going back to the shotgun next year...

Not sure what happened in relation to your injury. I don't understand the firing pin recoiling rearward. News to me.
I also have converted my bolt to contain the 209 primer somewhat like a shell holder. This helps contain almost all the primer blast. I found the factory Remington 209 conversion lacking and very messy at the breech.

However, I find my Rem 700ML gets dirty within 3 shots and by the 6th impossible to ram the bullet all the way down. With saboted bullets and either Shockley sticks or White Hots it's the same. Could be the 700 barrels are tighter. I'm no expert on BP and only starting playing with it last year.

Pierced primers can be caused by a too long FP. When pierced, the gas is directed onto the tip of the FP and can push it to the rear.

Some nimrod hit the back of the bolt with a hammer :( wasnt me... got the gun used. When I got the gun the fireing pin spring was rusted solid and the bolt was hard to close I took it apart ultrasonic cleaned it and its seemed to be working fine up until this past weekend... I was using tripple 7 pellets

I had my thumb in a simmilar position because my ft/r rifles have much thicker palm swells and they dont have fireing pins like remingtons do.

The fireing pin seems to stick out a bit with the bolt removed.

Just checked mine and no firing pin showing with bolt removed. If you could show a pic of the firing pin removed from the bolt I'm sure we could see the problem. It's way too long in cocked position.

Triple 7 pellets are know to be dirty so 3 firings is about right before you need to clean the bore in the 700ML.

The problem is it's not a true firing pin at all but a plunger (not sure if that the right term). On the face of the plunger there is the little "pin" that you see. If your vent liner is especially worn or your shooting with high pressures the primer can be blown back with enough force to push the plunger back and ruin you manicure. (kidding) I bought a "hunter bolt" kit from the states and it kicks ass. It's like the savage bolt and is the absolute best. Including shipping, breech plug and 3 ventliners it was $108

Good luck

That was my thought too... it doesnt have a traditional fireing pin thats forsure... I bought this as a cheap stepping stone into the world of muzzleloaders I think I will upgrade to a savage smokeless powder for next year... monday will be here soon and hunting season starts... I cleaned it up again last night with a squeeky clean barrel the hornady sabots press in quite easy... I have pyrodex pellets too but I am sighted in for 100 yards with the tripple 7 I dont know how much switching to pyrodex will change the zero or if having a clean barrel and less pressure will change the zero.

That firing pin mechanism looks WAY different than what was on the one I just sold.

Mine did not have an actual firing pin that protruded.

How many grains of powder you shooting? I believe they were rated for MAX of 120 or 130
