what do you think about the remington 742 ... please if you do not like remingtons do not reply to this thread
 
I had one years ago and never hated a rifle so much. Even after taking it to a gunsmith to "tune-up" and hone the chamber the thing was nothing more than an unattractive single shot. I tried several different types of factory loads and many hand loads and never could get it to function properly. Mine might have been an exceptional lemon but I vowed to never own a Remington auto-loading rifle again.
 
the only reason i am asking is because im talking with a guy about buying one and want to make sure its a good idea as for comfort wouldnt be different then anything else i shoot 303 lever 308 pump only semi is the 12 guage tho

You ask for opinions, but not if people don't like them? So, you want only good opinions??

Either way I'll give you mine. They're junk. There are a lot better choices out there, even for quick shooting, I'd use my 7600 or get a lever action.

And I am a Remington fan.;)
 
I love Remington pumps, but the semi-autos are crap pure, and simple.If your heart is set on a semi a BAR is a far better choice.

im sorry about this i meant remington firearms themselves some people have there preferences and will not wonder from that selected manufacturer
 
I bought a 742 Deluxe in .308 off of here a while back. Had it for about a month, I only fired 40 rounds from it in one session. I didn't have any feeding or ejecting problems with it, except for one "jam" because I didn't have the mag all the way in and after the first shot it sort of half loaded the next round. I traded it for a deal I got on a Model 700...
 
I have not heard great things about them...but I must say I owned one and hunted hard with it for almost 20 years before I sold it. It had survived alot, including a few quad accidents:redface: and always functioned perfectly. Took alot of game with her. Having said this, I was a maniac when it came to maintaining it.
 
The 742 isn't a bad gun, I have owned them before and own one now, inspite of the fact its a Remington, and they make crap.
If it is clean, and not rusty inside they work pretty well, or can be made too without much effort. If the rails are beat up its destined to become a straightpull bolt action or pump gun.
I would say get it if it is under 250$, over that, I would want a testfire, with it emptying a mag without any hiccups.
The fit and finish on the old 742s is better than most remington slop of today, and if you are willing to clean it, and maintain it, they are good rifles.

i have decided on not buying this rifle as the owner lives to far away for me to test it out
 
is there a forum on here where i can see what guns people have for sale i have been looking but with no luck of finding any posts

I know that but no way you could.

I canned Spanky about 20 times last night and I'm sure he's around here somewhere just laying low right now.

I ran your I.P. and it didn't come back with anything near him but you do have 3 different accounts on this forum and you could get bounced just for that, I'm giving you some leeway cause you haven't done anything to make me think your Spanky....yet.
