Remington 783 Heavy Barrel

Driller, love that article and the site. Helped me decide what length for my current creed (22") which just so happens to be a 783. It also sits in an lss and with it I find that I'd like a bit more fore end. Might end up in an ORYX or an AT-ONE. The shorties look great in the lss though.

Epoxy, I agree about the 10tr in 24", had one and just didn't feel right between the stock and the barrel length. I do prefer the 783's stock over the accustock but it might need some weight in the butt to balance it out. If the price of the 24HB is close to the shorty I see it in an ORYX for right around a grand. That will be a nice inexpensive chassis combo that should be nicely balanced.

Yup, that would be pretty awesome. If you end up going that route make sure to post about it!

I purchased this in 6.5 CM. Does anyone know what kind of muzzle break i can slap on it? or what the thread pattern is for the end cap?

Thanks

I see it being advertised as 5/8x24. Didn't see anything on Remington's site though. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

Thanks, Maybe my searching skills really suck..... I could not find it anywhere. I'm not sure how much recoil this will eliminate. I just wanted something that can be shot all day and also that my son could shoot and not be scared of recoil...(he's 10)

A brake will help with recoil but you might want to keep your son behind the rifle rather than beside it while shooting and give him double ear protection (foamies and muffs) plus I’d avoid shooting from covered positions. The concussion can really rattle your brain and can probably be just as off putting as excessive recoil.

Thanks for the info. One of my buddies used to have one on a 38-378 weatherby......wow loud. Double hearing protection for sure :)

Should be a 5/8-24 thread. For a brake, the larger surface area and porting will really help ease up recoil on that 6.5 CM. This is the brake I use on my 6.5 CMs and can offer. From the bench or prone, recoil is not much more then a heavy bullet 223. A significant difference over smaller diameter brakes.

But there will be a big difference in noise to the shooters... as all brakes will.

There are now a bunch of rear venting brakes that do a very nice job of reducing recoil but some can increase concussion to the shooter alot. Now this is a different problem to noise... which can be mitigated with double hearing protection (33 or 31db stuff for both plugs and earmuffs). Concussion will be that hot blast of air that can really intimidate a shooter... in big cals cause nose to run and rattle the eyeballs.

The more severe the rear venting, the higher the recoil reduction but the higher the concussion. Different brands will reduce this angle to try and drop concussion to low levels.

Otherwise, a brake used in the open will really help make the recoil tolerable if not, pleasant.

Good luck.

Jerry

Reviving my thread with a bit of an update. Had it in an LSS for a bit and shot great. Aesthetically didn’t perfectly please me, so sold it and grabbed an oryx chassis. At first I was nervous the forend would be too long for the 16.5” barrel, but after putting it together i think it looks awesome and aggressive. Haven’t shot it in the new chassis yet, but I’m super excited to. Hand loads in the LSS it was shooting 0.75”, so I can only imagine the oryx will perform the same. I’ll post pics of both setups below!

I picked up a .223 and other than the factory stock I really like it. There are quite a few options for stocks out there. I'd like to run it with aics mags too.

Wow, those are very nice chassis or stocks. I went the poor man's way with Krylon paint lol.

Could you measure the clearance between the barrel thread end and the front of the Oryx stock? Thinking of putting one together in .223 with https://truenortharms.com/ar15_defa...e-can-suppressor-with-linear-compensator.html

Doesn’t look like you’ll quite make it. Assuming the 223 is the exact same dimensionally as the 308, it’s exactly 4 inches from the end up the barrel to the front of the forend, and 3-3/8” to the backside of the thread protector. Hopefully the photo shows up for you.
