Discontinued by Remington a while back, but still some stock out there in selected stores. It's a Zastava Remington in Mauser 98 action (I think it's the same gun Charles Daly was importing under their contract a while back too). I am considering one in 7mm Rem Mag. I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who owns one regarding the quality/accuracy of this gun.

Dan,

Long time no talk. Yes it's a Mauser clone. I like the fact that it is still available, in very limited supply, in a walnut stock too. I'm not really a Remington fan (I do own the 673, however), but it isn't really fully a Remington is it? It would appear that the actions alone were imported from Serbia and then Remington barrelled/stocked them in US. I think I'll go for it.

Your impression was mistaken. Some sporterised milsurp, some classic civilian sporting rifles including some built on commercial production Mauser actions.

And idea if they are available in 6.5x55? My father is in the market for one in a hunting rifle, not a milsurp.

They were not available in 6.5. Look here;

to see the gun and the calibers that were once available. The picture on the Rem site shows a laminate stock, but they came in synthetic and walnut as well. Only the walnut interests me really.

A friend of mine purchased a 6.5x55 swede from Tradex and found them to be very good to deal with and he loves his 'classic' gun which I had to admit when I saw it was really in very nice shape. He didn't purchase the best one on the site by any means either. The deer in his freezer this winter is thanks to the 6.5. Amazing ballistics aren't they...

They are. My father in laws is built on a 96 action I believe (cant remember which, 96 or 98) and he took a spike buck with it this fall. Although ballistics hardly mattered as the shot was about 15 feet.

The 798 arrived today. After a disassembly and thorough cleaning I think I am going to like this gun. I will polish the bolt channel and maybe bed the action better (looks like hot glue gun glue around the front pillar!). I will shoot it first though, just in case it surprises me and does not drift at all. Chuck Hawks may have erred in his estimate of this gun's weight though, since with it's walnut stock it is the lightest rifle I own (maybe his had the laminate stock). Sure looks a lot like my Parker Hale M98 action I must say.

So, who else out there has one of these? Really like to hear from you...

I don't have a Remington 798 but I do have a Charles Daly with the same Zastava made action. I also have a Zastava M70 PSS on order which is the same commercial 98 action but in stainless steel. I think the Zastava made commercial 98's are very good guns for the money. They are made from quality steels and are reasonably well finished. It's hard to beat the 98 action for reliability.

I had bought one a couple years ago in 270. Took it out to the range, first round chambered then the second jammed into the side of the chamber and would feed. Tried cycling through but every other round would cycle crooked off the loading ramp and jam. My dealer took it back and gave me another off the shelf no questions asked. This one operated flawlessly. It was a bit rough at first but never jammed and shot ok for a stock rifle. Mine was laminate and was fairly heavy for a 270. The trigger had a lot of creep and over travel, but was supposed to be fully adjustable, I just never got to it. Unfortunately I never hunted with it and other than a couple trips to the range it sat in the safe until it formed a partial payment on my new CZ 375 this year.
Sorry, not a lot of help. All and all I think it could have been made into a decent hunter I just didn't put the effort into it.
Good luck with it though. I'm interested to hear how it works out for you.
