Remington 870 LEO top folder

I know the folders suck but I feel like my surplus 870 needs it...

Looks perfect the way it is.

It's a real treat when the shoulder plate half folds up during firing and the metal plate becomes a wedge into your shoulder absorbing all that lovely recoil into about two inches of pure delightful pain.

Exactly. Had one, shot it, and sold it. It ok if your wearing body armour or heavy clothing I suppose.

Having the ability to own 14" or 12.5" barreled shotguns negates the 18" barreled shotgun with a folder advantage. That's just my opinion.

Does anyone like there LEO top folder? All I have read is negative but the CF use them??Dave

They are in the system but that doesn't mean they're being used. I'd never actually seen the folder in the CF until my current unit got our shotguns. Wpns tech couldn't switch them out fast enough.

All of our shotguns are also 14" lop even though we don't go anywhere without flak jackets these days. Just because the CF has them doesn't mean it's the best or most ideal piece of kit.

I have a brand new le folder on my 870 (had been in storage) but it is for looks only, takes 5 min to change out with the hardwood butt for shooting. Apparently the hard plastic handgrip can get brittle over time and even shatter, can't confirm this but it makes sense.

Choate makes a far superior top folder (they have them for 870s). They are ugly but lock up solid open and closed and Choates customer service is second to none. Even to Canadian customers.

For "function over form" shooters they are the way to go top folder wise.

Definitely kind of ugly, AND it doesn't say "Law Enforcement Only" on it......lol...who needs practical?

They are good for making a shotgun compact enough to pack or otherwise squirrel away.

They are awful things to shoot....poorly made.

Yer better off simply mounting a PG only....shooting one of these unfolded is that poor.

As mentioned earlier....Choate makes a much superior top folder that is better designed, and altho as difficult to shoot as most shotgun folders are it is serviceable.
I have a couple of Choate folders ...work well.

If one is going for a >26in oal shotgun that needs to be as small as is legal....I'd go with a youth stocked 12~14in gun.
Otherwise a 18in PG shotgun if mag capacity is important.

Well, I just got back to the range, and to be honest, I was really surprised. I ran a good number of 00 buck (S&B and Federal), and figure I have a fairly considerate snapshot.

The stock itself is quite nice. The one that I managed to get was in fantastic condition, which makes it a little easier on the eyes. Though there is a little rattle, I found it to lock open or closed quite well, and the actuating buttstock seemed to hold fairly true under spring tension.

I shoot with hard plastic buttstocks on my shotguns, so perhaps I've ironed out any bad form. When placed firmly in the shoulder (not on the chest), I found the recoil to be pleasant. I took a little slow motion video, and it seems as though the stock twists just enough to soften it up. Again, I'd call the recoil to 'nice', and trackable in my follow ups.

As for the cheek weld - which is another area I clamp down - I would say that is also another non-issue. Outside of the circulation marks from pressing my cheek into the arm (which quickly faded), I felt no agitation, or even discomfort in the jaw.

With all that, and the undeniably good looks, I'd say that the LEO top folder is a terribly misunderstood animal. If I had a place for the old girl I'd certainly keep her, that's for sure.

I'm sure everyone is different, but I'll say "myth busted."

Hateful to operate: even more so in the winter. This is true of most top-folders though: cold and uncomfortable on the face & shoulder.
I'm willing to bet there is no OEM folder as comfortable as even the worst OEM fixed stock.
