Remington 870 Police Magnum

Leg, Painkillers and others: Thanks for the clarification and additional details. I’m a Remington 700 fanboy, but know little about their line of shotguns. I think I paid around $475.00 for the 870 at the time, from Lever Arms and using my old paper FAC no less! I did manage to get a proper factory Remington magazine extension for it later on.

I had a catalog for Remington law enforcement products from that time frame I’ll have to see if I can dig it up-it had breakdowns on all their LE specific offerings for the 870, the 1100 and the old 700 PSS and 40x rifles.

This might help ..... Remington catalogues from 1911 to 2011 ..... :)

Remington police models are built in a dedicated, separate part of the factory and have higher QC on parts and assembly.

Wrong again.

Have you visited the REM factory?
I have and I can tell you the Remington Police shotguns go through many more additional tests before they leave the factory to police agencies and military.

Police shotguns are not assembled in the same area of the commercial plant as other Remington shotguns.

All police issued shotguns are assembled in a special, separate part of the plant that is secured for factory personnel only.
When shotgun parts enter this special building area, they are visually inspected by hand to make sure they are top quality and 100% functional, reduce chances the gun malfunctioning in life or death situations.

Differences between 870 Express and Remington Police models are comprised of different, tool steel parts, extra power springs for reliability, fitment and assembly. REM Police shotguns go through a more thorough quality control inspection before they are released.

The 870 Police shotguns are built in a highly secured area of the plant in New York. It’s an area that only builds military and law enforcement shotguns.

Wingmasters of earlier years are a totally different animal, but the Police models whether blued, or parkerized, old or new, have always been a more reliably built shotgun by far.

i had police ones that were not as well built as wingmaster magnum ... we all have been told about the different process and how good they were and that did not stop many agencies to use wingmaster instead of the police ones and certainly for a reason ...

It would be nice if they were all built that way, wouldn't it?

i have a gun with no serial on the barrel , just the receiver. is there a way to date the gun using the serial number?
Remington Customer Service is the only way aside from the barrel codes I posted a link to above. That’s if the barrel is original to that receiver. There are no publically accessible databases for Remington serial numbers.

There was a time between 1999 and 2001 when Remington stopped stamping the barrels with date codes.
If your gun doesn’t have a date code, it could be from those years.
If you have the original box for that gun, there would be a manufacture date on the end flap.
After 2005, there haven’t been any further barrel code listings available to the public.

For anyone who is interested ..... I just emailed RemArms ..... and these are the 870 Police offerings currently in production .... meaning available to order right now:

Bad choice to have the swivel stud screwed into the top of the 11” breacher receiver.
Don’t need a rail, or sight either. Whatcha gonna need sights for with that short barrel.
And those 18” labelled barrels, I’m pretty sure they actually measure 18-1/2”. They show to be flush with the end of the REM two round extension.
If they were 18”, they’d fall 1/2” shorter of the extension as all the earlier models do.

I believe they had the rail because the Modular Combat shotgun “MCS” came as a kit and with that kit you could run optics if you preferred with the two other set up options. The pistol grip was on a rail, it could be removed and swapped for a stock in seconds. They had three different barrel lengths to choose from. The sling stud was designed to be used with a single point sling. Cydex made a receiver holster to keep it close and tight. The pic below has the QD grip and that is what made it restricted.
