Remington 870 Tac-14s are back!

Medvedqc, I just ordered a Tac-14 Hardwood .... so I can tell you in around a week or two what my impressions are.

And then I have to ship the barrel off .... and to get the barrel threaded for chokes .....

And this winter I think I will get the receiver and barrel polished and blued .... I just love old school high gloss blueing .... :)

ah ah your fault you put me back on those bird grip and the wood seems way better than the plastic one. for not that much more.

Lol .... sure blame it on me .... :)

Yes, even though the Tac-14 is not "traditional" .... I am a sucker for traditional wood and high gloss polished blueing ....

I don't know if you have seen this video ..... but Brobee is spot on with his recommendations and according to my experience with my current Tac-14.

Meaning installing a longer forend and using low recoil ammo ....

yes i ve seen that video and always thought it was yours. pretty sure you gave at least the link lol ... always someone to blame for others decisions ... is not the world we re in lol ... but i cant blame you we re on gunnutz lol ....

I pulled the trigger … and bought a brand new Tac-14 Hardwood last week …. :)
And I had a chance to examine it, clean it, modify it and shoot it. And here are my impressions …

The positive first …. the metal work and metal finish all look good …

I like that the gun comes with a +1 extension …. meaning the barrel comes with the old style ball detente … and I don’t have to drill out (or swage out) some dimples and in order to install a mag extension.

Also, the gun comes with a drilled and tapped receiver and comes with sling swivels studs installed. A nice plus!

Today I was able to shoot the gun for the first time …. I put around 30 rounds of birdshot, buckshot an slugs through the gun. I started out with low recoil ammo … and then all the way up to full power 3” magnum loads.

And here starts the negative …. I had two issues. I had one failure to extract. The gun jammed up completely, and I had to take it apart and to clear the jam. I realized that extracting the shot shells after each shot needed quite a bit of force racking the forend. I presume it is the known issue of the chamber not being polished enough. I guess I know what I will be doing tomorrow … cleaning the gun and polishing the chamber ... :(

And the other issue that I had is that the sling mount plate on the mag extension would move forward under recoil …. It did not hold in place. I already have an S&J +1 extension here and I will swap that +1 extension out tomorrow. I have never had a problem with the S&J mag extensions.

More negative …

• The sling that comes with the gun is flimsy … I discarded it right away.
• I was really disappointed in the wood furniture … the birdshead grip and the forend are varnished on the outside …. but the surfaces that are mating with the metal are bare wood and as you can see from the pictures below. Meaning. If you use this gun a day long in the rain … the wood will swell up from the water …. And then eventually the wood will shrink again … and the finish will crack and come off in blisters. The old 870 Express guns were known for this. And nothing has changed here with this RemArms Tac-14 Hardwood.
• Also, I realized that RemArms used a standard magazine spring and which is too short with the +1 mag extension. That is a bit disappointing …
• The back of the receiver is still crooked and canting to the left … and as all the brand new 870s that I bought in the last 8 years. You will not notice this until you use the back of the receiver as your sighting pane or as your rear sight. Not a big deal …. but it seems that those receivers are milled with the same machinery as Remington had before and with the same tolerances and “defects”.

Ok, in order to make this gun work for me …. here is what I did:

• I applied a couple of coats of Tru-Oil on the birds-head grip inside and out and to waterproof it.
• I slipped a piece bicycle tire tubing over the birds-head grip and to keep my hand from sliding forward under recoil and so that my middle finger does not get slammed into the trigger group with every shot. (Ouch … that hurts!)
• I swapped out the forend for a longer Wingmaster forend. The Wingmater forend is varnished/sealed all around and it is a bit longer and which makes a huge difference when shooting that gun.
• I installed an oversized Vang Comp Dome Head Safety. Just my preference of how to run 870s …. all my 870s have that dome head safety.
• Installed a Timney trigger fix. I just can’t live with the standard sluggish/creepy 870 trigger. With the fix the trigger is pretty good now … and I can now shoot decent 50 meter groups with slugs.
• I installed an S&J follower and longer magazine spring.
• And I am going to replace the +1 magazine extension with an S&J +1 mag extension.
• Installed a sling with a 3 finger loop. The 3 finger loop helps to control the gun when shooting heavy duty loads/ammo …

Voila …. that’s it …. Lets cross fingers that I can fix the sticky extraction problem by polishing the chamber.

Also, I bought the gun and to have a Tac-14 with removable chokes …. so the next step is to send the barrel in and to get it threaded for Remchokes.

And finally, the big question ….

Is this new RemArms Tac-14 better (with respect to quality) than the 870 Express from a couple of years back?

Yeahhhhhh ….. I don’t know …. ?? Somehow I don’t see much improvement over the 870 Express from a couple of years back. I still have to modify and fix a brand new gun and replace parts … and to make it work reliably …. :(

Anyhow, that is my conclusion for now.

The positive: once you get an 870 working nicely .... it is a very reliable workhorse .... :)

i have one i made from a police 870 that came with a fourteen inch barrel. swapped out the stock for a raptor grip that i bought at a gun show. it has an plus one extension and sling plate. i wrapped the grip with bicycle tube cut in a strip which made a world of difference. i am curious to find out more about the three finger sling you have as i have not heard of them

I started with this type a couple of years back:

And today I am using this type sling with 3 finger loop ... I made those myself from webbing and strap hardware/buckles ....
What I like is ... that 3 finger loop is there and I can use it .... but I don't have to .... it just hangs there out of the way .... but that 3 finger loop really helps to control the recoil with heavier magnum loads.

Demonstrated Concepts unfortunately wont ship to Canada.
I made my own based on his design for my Tac14.
When I built a Mossberg Shockwave recently I ordered a strap from Defender Tactical which does ship to Canada.
I cant speak highly enough of a recoil strap on this style of gun. It really makes the gun a lot more usable. Without one I found my hand slipping off the grip and it didn’t feel safe.
With a recoil strap its practical to bring the gun up close to your face without fear of getting gobsmacked.

I still can't get my head around how this set up is fired accurately. When I shoulder a pump shotgun and fire, my trigger hand is pulling the stock into my shoulder, and my pump hand is pushing the handle forward to avoid short shucking the rounds. The forces at play look like <>, which is different from say a rifle where both are pulling rearward into the shoulder <<.

Without a stock, some of the three finger type slings would lock the rear hand forward > which means the pump hand would have to hold pulling rearward < in order to hold the gun, so what happens when you pull the trigger and the bolt instantly starts rearward?

The 3 finger sling just prevents the grip from sliding out of your hand.
It also controls the recoil of the gun rearward enabling you to control it better and the gun moves a lot less.
Same idea as the recoil strap.
Ideally its used in conjunction with a strong push pull to isolate the recoil in your forearms.
The combination of strong push pull technique and a recoil strap makes these short guns surprisingly effective.

It’s the same as a full stock, rear hand pulls and the front hand pushes. You should watch some of Brobee’s videos on how to shoot them, it’s pretty easy once you understand the technique.

Gabe Suarez is a modernist when it comes to the witpro. Put out a fair bit of material on it. As a fan of the TAC14, my advice is to just grip it as hard as you can, and let the recoil take its natural course - muzzle up, grip down.
