Remington 870 woes...

Remington has thrown away quality and pride to make cheaper and cheaper products....even promoting such crap as the Model 710s and 770s with garbage scopes. No more new anything from Remington will I ever buy after trying to deal with their repair service.....today's Remington products have slipped to new lows on the quality scale!

Agreed, i got an 870 cuz its a simple reliable shotty. Compared to a buds winchester sxp its night and day for the price and what you get. The sxp with its chrome plated barrel goodness is just gorgeous, but just not what i would want for a tac shotty

If the 870 had a .1% failure rate, there would be lawsuits, police contracts would dry up and the company would be out of business in a year.

You got a lemon. Don't get it worked on, get a proper shotgun. You paid fully functional money and didn't get a fully functional gun. That isn't a warranty issue.

My 2012 870 was flawless but all the problems are getting hard to ignore. I would be interested to know how many 870's are sold per year as compared to other company's.

My 870 tac express was and is full of issues. The rough chamber often will prevent extraction of cheap hulls. It has been polished by Casey and that helped but did not solve the problem. Every fastener on the firearm has come loose even the front sight is loose. In my opinion it is a very poorly built firearm. I would sell it but I am a stubborn SOB and want to get it running right.

I don't get it. You have a shotgun that performs flawlessly. Why does someone else's lemon affect your product?

If you were purchasing it, maybe it might sway you, but you are evidence that the OP's issue isn't a sure thing.

Police models are different specs that what we are buying and are subjected to a totally different set of QA requirements.
Comparing a 870 apple to a 870 orange
Police models feature a stronger sear spring and magazine spring, and they receive extra care and inspections during assembly. The Police models also often have an extended tube magazine.
In fact into the 90's they were altered wingmasters I have not had a new one apart but bet for the most part they still are. That is why there is no problems with them
There are many many 870 make ups out there which is part of the problem. Rem should have left the 870 label for wingmasters only and called the rest whatever.

You can buy an 870P. If you pay half the price, you should expect half the gun. However, if the 870 were a completely unreliable POS, no procurement officer would choose the 870P.

Sorry but I am not following you?? A 870 police will not have the issues being seen in a 870 express that is all I am saying take care

I get that the 870P is a superior (and thus more expensive) product. I get that it gets far more quality control and better components.

My point is that if the 870 Express was a massive failure, the 870P's reputation would be tarnished as well.

If ####'s and Cabelas and Wholesale Sports and all the others started getting a high level of customer complaints on the 870 Express, they would stop ordering them. As it is, the 870 Express is the de facto standard for pump guns.

Don't agree because remington sold over 11 million 870's since 1950 so think of how many junk express there would have to be to tarnish the reputation and even result in 1% of total sales, especially since probally 90% of the express are OK for the average hunter that shoots less than 3 boxes a year.
Most express owners you will find also had a sweet wingmaster at one time but cannot justify putting out 800 for a new one so will be happy with an express That old 870 love also helps with their sales.
I have a couple of express in my collection a 28 and 410 which work perfect it seems the 12ga are the ones with issues.
The express today reminds me of the chroming problem GM had in the 60's and early 70's. When we were restoring an old car we may have to order a bumber 4-6 times to get one worth putting on the car but did that hurt the reputation of a 70SS chevelle Nope.
I would still but an express 12ga today but only after I got to look it over 1st. Take care

Just imagine if a clueless guy like me had purchased this gun. Hope you can bring it back.

Good point man. Luckily op has a good knowledge of firearms and caught all the issues with this gun There are many shooters that are not this savvy that would get stuck with this piece of junk. :(

Still sorry to hear your new gun is not up to par. I hope this gets resolved to your satisfaction.

I didn't want to ship my new 870 back given that a) it would take forever and b) who knows what I would get back... SO I decided that because I was pretty confident that I could fix/polish the scoring inside the mag tube I would just keep it and do the work myself.

After making a polishing rod with a dowel, various grits of sandpaper, steel wool and using my drill I was able to remove the scoring, reblued the ID and am happy with the results. Not exactly what you should have to do to a brand new gun but at the end of the day I now have the gun that I wanted. :)

Great to hear mate! I am glad that your end result is a good one!

Don't you think that 12 ga probably accounts for the greatest number of sales? And therefore statistically is going to show more problems.

I have a old 870 wingmaster in 3", it sits in the gun locker most of the time. But I won't sell it. It reminds me of better time, when big green made quality.
That being said, last year I bought a versa max, and so far it has been a keeper. Eats any shells you feed it right down to 7/8 ounce loads, pleasure to shoot. Have to see how the durabilty turns out.
My son in law bought a new 870 expess and was very dissapionted, shells stuck in chamber ,boken trigger cheap plastic parts.

ya i know what your going through... my 12g express has been in the shop under warrenty more then i have been using it for skeet. First time i took it in they changed out the guts...2 time (haven't go back yet) they are talking about changing the barrel? the shells aren't ejecting all the way and getting stuck sideways half way out! If i have to bring it in again it will be for a new one!!!!! we have an 1100 that works flawless (80's model) should of bought used:( how does that work out?

p.s got from epps
