I have a Remmington 7400 in .243 and it looks like the (plastic?) ejection port cover has separated (broken) in front of the cocking handle. Questions....
1. Is this plastic piece prone to breaking on these rifles?
2. Will the rifle function properly with this piece broken?
3. Are there any more durable replacement pieces available.

I see that Brownells has these listed for about $5.00 and also saw on the net that they can be replaced by removing the cocking handle and sliding in a new one. Any help would be appreciated.

It really isn't necessary to remove the operating handle.
Sorry I can't give a blow by blow guide to installation but you should be able to puzzle it out when you have the new one in hand.

can be used fine without the cover it just lets dust and grunge in.

to install it without any risk of breaking the new one, you need to pull the bolt out of the action. trying to bend and finagle the new one in with nothing taken off is a good way to waste the $5 on the new plastic one.

they used to make steel ones for the 742, but they likely wont work on the 7400 or 750, and if they do, you will have to disassemble the whole gun to install it. there is no bend or strech or denting the steel one.
