I bought a Model 760 Remington pump in 30-06 last fall and took it to the range today with iron sights, and was impressed, 1-1 1/4 in groups 5 rounds at 50,yds fist time shooting! It's my fist pump action centre fire rifle, Going to like it I think!:)

Congrats on your purchase. They make a pretty good hunting rifle.I've gone through a couple of .308 760's and 1 270 as well as 4 or 5 7600's in 30-06 and 35 Whelen. My current 7600 is a .35 Whelen purchased from Doug off the board here at CGN.
I've been pleased with the pump guns over the years and can't see myself being without at least 1.Have fun with your 30-06. Cheers Bac4

I just bought one as well, in 270. Circa 1950 something. It's very accurate for a pump, and will be used to get my first deer this year. I've got a 3-9, with weaver high rings.

I don't think this one has had to much use, as it;s in VG++ condition, one thing is the mag release, man is it stiff, will it lossen up with use? Got a Leupold one piece base and low rings coming, going to put a VXII 3X9X40 on it, sound good?

I have a model 76 (the oldest version) Everything has loosened up comfortably on this but the magazine release. This gun must be 25 or 30 years old, still cockstiff. Also the pump release button on the other side is just as stiff. Have dropped a mag or two trying to release the slide/action.
I think its one of the better shooting guns I have. I own several bolts and 1 lever, and this is the fastest shooter. I Just cant get a good shooting stance with it, as the pump seems to be where you are intended to hold the gun, My tendency seems to be where the magazine is. Having a two piece body isnt always the best fit. I am 5'10" and 228 lbs. It just doesnt fit.

I've used several mounts and scopes on my 760/7600s over the years. I prefer the Weaver one pc base as it is quite a bit lighter and offers more than one forward ring position. Also I found that a smaller scope seems to work well. A 1.5x5 Leupold is perfect.

Those rifles aren't exactly lightweight, so I prefer to keep them a light as possible.

I love my 760 in .06.Being a carbine its excellent for carrying in the thick stuff.Very accurate(for a pump). This particular gun was considered a factory leftie ie;left hand safety and a nice lefthand deluxe stock.I wish they had of reversed the ejection port but I guess you cant have it all.I have since put a remington replacment synthetic stock,a K4 weaver and Warne QD's.Great combo! On another note..when I bought this rifle the slide was very sloppy and noisy and in talking to a gunsmith/friend he informed me there is a rubber O ring on the front slide which I promtly changed. Now its quiet and tight.

I agree that these are great hunting rifles, and I have had a "few."

In fact right now if I took a look in the locker I would find 760s in .300 Savage, .308 Win, and .35 Rem............. I personally prefer the 760s to the new 7600s, they fit me better.

I agree with SuperCub about the one-piece Weaver base, but a Leopold base is a thing of beauty. You may find that the scope you are thinking about is a bit heavy for the gun, though.

Thank Heaven you did not say that you are putting see-through rings on it! A lot of guys in my neck of the woods do have them and they are an abomination - you have to lift your cheek wayyyy off the stock to see through the blasted things..............

Bought a brand new Rem 760 BDL in 270 Win back in the 70's.
Took off the iron sights, installed a Bushnell 3x9-40 scope on Weaver bases and rings (hate those see-thru's like Doug).
Shoots like a Laser, looks Great ,feels great.
The only thing wrong with it is that it's soo great that I simply can't justify buying another Deer Rifle !!!Believe me I've tried as I am a CGN !!

The first Deer I killed with it was a Buck running accross a Power Line at about 90 yards. The gun fired once, the Buck did a summersalt (head over tail) and that was it .No bullet entry or exit hole (yes,I checked the ears). Both horns were broken off.1 1/2 & 3 inches from the skull. That was the beginning of a BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP..Hasn't let me down since..

I put a 3x9 Nikon Buckmasters on my 7600 .270. I bought a 1 piece Weaver base and Burris Rings from WSS. I bought the rifle last fall and have found similar groupings with the iron sights. I am anxiously waiting for the weather to warm up here!!!! Perhaps this weekend I'll get my first chance to try the new combo out.

Good luck to you!

back to BWANA............I reckon the scope that badbrass needs will depend on where he is hunting and what kind of ranges he needs to shoot. My point about his chosen scope (Leopold Vari-X II 3-9X40) was not that it has too much magnification (although that may be the case) but that it is fairly heavy. A lighter weight scope would be better as long as he gets the magnification he needs for his eyeballs and his hunting area. SuperCub's suggestion would be an excellent choice, if it meets the needs of the hunter.

I do find the 760s to be good accurate rifles, but personally have not shot any that can put them in the ten ring like a bolt gun can. I think they are a really outstanding hunting rifle for closer country and shorter ranges, and would not choose a pump gun myself for more open country hunting with longer shots. But (praise the Lord!) I have the luxury of being able to choose from a number of shootin' irons to fit the hunting situation. :) A one-gun hunter needs to find the gun and scope that meets MOST of his/her needs, and by golly a 760 might be just the ticket. :D

.308 of course. :)

As with most deer I have shot over the years, 90 % of them have been no more than 200 yds. max with 80 % I would think under 150yds. If im pushing bush I take my 30-30 Trapper. So either scope would work! Thanks all for your replies.:)

I have old 760 in 300 Savage and put a Leupold VX-II
1-4 X times scope. The scope apeture is only 20 mm and I used
low rings...so my cheek stays nicely down on the stock.

Used it deer hunting for three years now and got deer 2 out of 3 years
with it.

They are good guns and I think a lot of people still use them.

I have really appreciated adding the recoil pad to my 760 30-06. It was hardly used before I bought it, but it works flawlessly and is minute of moose if not minute of angle. Yeah, the mag release is a bit stiff. I have had mine apart and don't remember an O-ring on the pump mechanism, yes, it is a bit rattly.
