Does anyone know if the new Remington 700 BDL Deluxe and 870 Wingmaster are just as good as the older ones or has the quality on these ones gone down. It seems like Remington quality has dropped across the entire product line when the Express versions came out. I also noticed in the 2012 Remington Catalog that they don't chamber the .308 Win. in the majority of their rifles. Is nobody buying the .308 Win anymore?

well i can tell you that 308 is one of the most popular hunting and recreational rounds out there. it is even pretty poular in the military. im not sure on the remington quality, but as far as i have hear the remington 700's are stigg good quality, the 870's i think are still good but i have read reviews of the wood furniture swelling up and cracking? someone that owns on will have to give a better answere.

Remmy is following the same path as GM, will they ever recover, i doubt it... JP.

Does the verbal diarrhea ever stop flowing?
Remington will still be around to sponsor you when you win the Canadian F-class title. ;)

To the O.P., new production Model 700's are just fine. Go to the gunshop, put your hands on one, visually check fit and finish, pick one that looks good, take it home and enjoy shooting it. If Remington has quit chambering sporting arms in .308 that would be news to me and a mistake on their part I think.
As for the 870 express, they are built exclusively for the budget racer. I've owned three myself and they all functioned fine, just a crappy finish that was prone to oxidation. They ain't no wingmasters!

I have owned a few Remingtons. Some were just ok...and one was terrific. To be fair, the "ok" ones had a habit of splitting cases, but passed the headspace guages, as verified by a gunsmith. I had no complaints about the operation nor the finish.

I still own a Remington and that rifle folks...will not be sold anytime soon. It will outshoot ANYTHING else out there I have come across at the range, bar none. It does not have gold engravings nor does it have pricey bedding and pillars. It just shoots fantastically well...and that is the whole point...right? :D

i bought a bdl 2 years ago it is very nice i would prefer an old fashioned dovetailed ramp instead of the 1 piece cant change the bead but its ok for most people thefloorplate is painted and the follower is a piece of folded sheetmetal but for 680 dollars it all fits as value in an attractive accurate rifle

I just shot a brand new 700 Remington in 300 RUM.
Belongs to a close friend, who thinks he needs more power, lol.
It is the laminated Thumbhole stock, SS version.
This rifle functioned perfectly, and shot amazingly well.
Three shots, time and again, into less than Âľ inch at 100.
Fit and finish, while not on a par with a Cooper or some such pricey toy,
was very acceptable.
Zero feeding, firing or extraction issues.
Just a real good hunting rifle.

I recently sold my 870 Express. I didn't use it a lot and decided I like a side by side better for birds and will probably get an H&R slug gun. I think if you can afford it, a Wingmaster is worth the extra, but I don't mean that an Express isn't worth having.

Just make sure you take it out and put a thousand rounds through it before the warranty runs out. It is a very sound design, if it doesn't show any defects by then it will probably last your lifetime.

I was looking at the 2012 catalog and noticed that they did not offer the .308 Win. in the 700 BDL Deluxe and then checked other 700 models and nearly all of them don't come in .308 anymore which I found kind of strange. Maybe they are leaning towards the short magnums instead.

That is very peculiar. Not that I doubt what you saw in the catalogue, but I just can't see any manufacturer cutting out what may be arguably the single most popular cartridge available.

I believe that the .308 is chambered in the Model 7 line up instead. I've owned numerous 700s and think very highly of them.

The 700 BDL & 870 Wingmaster didn't suffer from the same spotty QC as their lower end/entry-level SPS or Express lines. You shouldn't have any problems. Remington still offers one of the most accurate factory bbl on the market.

I think people tend to get caught up in the CDL VS SPS, or WingMaster VS Express situation and often blame remington for the quality not being up to par.

But CDL is priced along with many other rifles of better quality and fit/finish. When buying an SPS, just know what you are buying and don't compare it to the finish on your buddies Browning and you will be fine.

Remington quality is really hit and miss. Ive owned many and as of late my last 3 have had issues. I had a LVSF .204 that would not eject spent cartridges, a Model 7 predator .204 that had issues closing the bolt and my current .204 a VSSF II where the holes drilled in the reciever were out of line and needed to be shimmed. That being said my current .204 is an outstanding shooter.

Cheers!!
