In recognition of past military service, Remington has resurrected its Model 700 M40 Rifle to commemorate the U.S.M.C. Scout/Snipers who served in Vietnam. This Limited Edition rifle has been replicated as closely as possible to the original rifles built by Remington under contract for the United States Marine Corps in 1966.

I wonder how much USD ??? I checked out the ' rem ' website under MSRP it says to call....I guess its easier to spend 9 minutes long distance trying to ascertain its price, rather than taking 3 seconds to post it on their site

Davidson's is the exclusive distributor for this rifle and will not ship any to Canada, I inquired about them last year. It is a collaberation with Remington, Iron Brigade Armory, Davidson's and The USMC Sniper Association. I have seen several at dealers in Flordia and they average $1400.00 US. Rumor has it that Leupold is going to make a reproduction scope for this rifle, but nothing as of yet. This is a nice rifle and would make nice for any collection.

I'm curious...Hathcock used an Unertl in Vietnam, wasn't that the scope generally used?

unertl scopes were the optics of choice at the time 10x. but Hathcock shot a Winchester M70. neither of his books mention him ever using a m40.

think we could talk browning into producing a commemorative M70?

Unertl are still a commonly used scope for many military and LE organizations. $2500 each for civvies.

I know the FBI HRT uses/d(?) them. The Tasco Super Sniper scopes are modeled after the original versions if I am not mistaken.

Hathcock used the M-1D Garand, and Win Mod 70 his first deployment. He later used the Remington M40 with Redfield scope in later deployments. I've got a couple of old interviews with him talking about his rifles & equipment he used.

the marines used the M70 in 3006 with unertl scopes, in 1966 the marines ordered M700 in 308 with redfied 3-9x scopes. the M700 underwent alot of modifications and eventually in 1970 was designated the M40.

the M70 was most numerous in the early part of the war, they were slowly replaced by the M40. both were used heavily in the war.

Same maker very different scopes. The old vietnam era Unertl's where long target scopes with external adjustments. Nothing at all like the modern sniper scopes. The Tasco scopes are unlike either.

Nope, but I'll look around this weekend and see if I can find the original hard copies. If I can, I'll scan and post them.

i just remembered an article i read of hathcock testing a unertl scopes durability by pounding a nail in with it. apparently it still worked after that, not even a dent. in the same article he claimed there were more redfield scopes in the repair shop than in the field during the war.

this new M40 would be a nice adition to a collection, if i could afford one.

Hatchcock used a M70 30/06 8X Unertl until his last tour were he used the 700 with a Redfield 3-9X40 which was cut short by the Amtrac explosion and he came home.

The Unertl is no longer in Service with US, Canadian or FBI services.

The Unertl 10X was originally build by John Unertl and he is the one who brought it to the USMC in mid 77 for testing, that is when tent pegs were pounded into the ground with it, reinstalled and showed how well it stood up to serious abuse.

It was just in the last few years that US Optics rebuilt he scope with some very much needed upgrades and then started to manufacture it.

Last month in one of the gun magazines I bought, there was a write up on MST-100/Unertl and the bottom line as that the writers felt this was the most durable and battle proven sniper scope ever built. I have shot a few rifles with this scope and handled many of them, they are the real deal, just to damb much money.

The current reproduction rifle is to original factory spec. right down to the safety, it is a nice set up.

Not Unertl but US Optics

Damn! I love my kevlar/graphite stocked heavy barrel 700s, but that old-school M40 looks so friggin' smokin'! I think if we could get a Remington dealer to bring these in I'd have to buy one just on principal!
