Hello everyone, I have been having problems with my SPS Varmint in .204. It does not want to shoot consistenly. I have a good scope on it (Elite 3200), im shooting Winchest Supreme Ballistic SilverTip (32 gr). Shooting off of a bench (at 85 yrds) with a bipod and a rolled up glove underneath the butt it shoots eradically. I would have no problem blaming the inconsistancy on myself, but off this exact bench, at the exactly the same distance i can shoot a 1/2 inch group with my .17 HMR. I have also had other (more experienced) people shoot the gun with the same result. The bullet spread varies from 1/2 inch, all the way to 3-4 inches. The gun is new and only has about 60-80 rounds through it. It has been cleaned recently, the action is smooth, everything feels right but it just doesnt shoot well. There was one case where i shot a 3 shot group under 1/2 inch, i was extatic so i shot another group and it was everywhere. I have not been able to get a group under 4 inches other than that one time. I am very new to the sport so i would appreciate any advice/opinions on what you think the problem may be.

Action bolts at proper torque? 50-60 in/lbs

Scope rings/bases at proper torque? 15in/lbs / 30 in/lbs

Barrel touchin stock anywhere?

Have you tried other ammo?

If it shoots 1/2" then spreads to many inches, it sounds to me like something is loose.

Eliminate all other variables first.

I haven't touched anything on the rifle other than the scope/rings/bases, and i know for a fact that they are solid because i just checked today. The barrel is not free-floated with the factory stock.

By "action bolts" what do you mean??

And yes i have tried other ammo, including handloads.

I do not have a torque driver so i do not know if its at proper torque.

Try hornady ammo, cheapest and most consistent factory ammo I have used. I have the same gun and it's real picky about what bullet I use. Shoots .75" groups with 32gr vmax and lucky if it will shoot inside 2" with nosler ballistic tip boattails.

I have tried hornady(40gr i believe), and it was the same story.

Take the action out of the stock and make sure the stock and action are dry of any oil or solvents that may be between the action and stock.

Start with a clean copper free barrel. Fire a couple fouling shots then start shooting for groups. do not clean the barrel again until the groups start to open up. Cleaning the bore is over rated sometimes.

I have the same gun as you. I bought it used because the guy could not get it to shoot. He free floated the stock and bedded it. It still would not shoot. Around 2-3 inches at 100 yards. I bought a 700 police HS precision take off stock and it is now MOA or better. My advice to you is to throw the factory stock away because they are junk.

I agree with the above poster.

The whole point about buying a Rem Varmint rifle is to build off it, not to have a good to go rifle. The price gets you the classic 700 and a barrel long enough to trim to length with money left over for a stock of your choice.

Sell the stock for 50$ and don't look back.

My 0.02$

I have found the inaccurate variable...Me. I took the rifle out today, had someone else shoot it, and they put 3 bullets in the same hole. I am very relieved to know that the rifle is fine, i will just have to spend some extra time practicing.

Three bullets in the same hole could be a fluke, and you've said in the first post that you've already had other people shoot it with poor results. I don't think you're out of the woods yet.

If you are shooting off a bipod with the sps "rubber" stock, the stock will flex and could be contacting the barrel and generally in a very inconsistent way. Not saying its that, but it is a very good possibility.

Try shooting it off bags and keep the front one a little ways back from the end of the stock if you can. You might be 'leaning into' or 'pulling back' the bipod and causing some flex in the stock.

I was shooting off of bags, and i Know now that it is me, because it was grouping when i had another person shoot it. This is actually a very good thing because it means that i dont have to #### around trying to fix it, it just means that i need to practise.
