I think much depends on many different factors when it comes to choosing .22 ammo. As many have said before me your gun will choose the ammo. But I think what games you are playing will make a difference in the ammo you are needing. Probably 75% of my rimfire shooting is done on a 50 foot indoor range , offhand with a single shot rifle or an auto loading hand gun. I only shoot the cheapest ammo that will function the auto. At the moment it is some old super-X in the auto and Federal bulk in the rifle . At 50 feet quit ones are not an issue.
If I am getting out to the gopher patch or a small bore silhouette match I switch to something sub sonic that shoots a bit better at the extended range often at over 100 meters . Gopher shooting for me is usually from a pretty solid rest so good ammo helps. Some of my friends idea of gopher shooting is walking into the gopher patch with a open sighted cooey all offhand shots and 15 yard is considered a long shot. Remington's out of the bucket work just fine. Many of these folks have probably never fired at a paper bull's-eye.
I have a couple of cases of that $20.00 plus a box ammo from eley ,RWS and Lapua that I rarely shoot , simply because my ability does warrant that kind of ammo for the shooting games I play. To a large degree the more you pay for ammo the better it will shoot. But if you have a one foot hold , one inch ammo will not help very much. So I have a hard time calling any ammo garbage if it used in it's proper application. It seems to me there is quite a lot of ammo snobbery going around.
