Remington vs Winchester

ok, I'll play.

Remington M1903 vs. Winchester(?) - R
Remington model 7 vs. Winchester(?)- R
Reminton model 30 vs. winchester model 54(?) - R

Remington model 788 vs. Winchester/Cooey 710 - R
Remington 700 push feed vs. Winchester post-64 push feed Model 70 - R

No clear winner ... Winchester was/is perhaps in the forefront over the years in "new" rifle cartridge development ... while Remington took the lead in commercializing "wildcats" and in Shotshell development.

Over the years these two companies have brought out a lot of great Cartridges. Of the two who do you think "won the battle" and why? :yingyang:

winchester, hands down. remington has almost always been playing catch-up.

lets see, in winchester's column.
30WCF, remington tries to compete with the 30 remington.
270 beat both the 280/7mm express and the 6.5 remington.
308 winchester, remington has no real competition.
243 beat the 244/6mm remington
300 win mag, had no competition from remington til recently.
338 winchester beat out the 8mm rem mag.
22 WMR beat the 5mm rem mag.
458 win, again remington didn't have a competing cartridge til recently.
300WSM, the only short mag i think will make it.

for remington.
7mm rem mag beat the 264 win, albeit making the cartridge that winchester should have.
22-250 buried the 225 win
222 rem
223 rem which winchester has no real answer too.
44 rem mag

this is not to say either company didn't bring out some other good cartridges, but how popular are the 220 swift, 284 win, 350 rem mag, and the 25-06 rem in comparison to others.

If we're talking successful cartridge development, you can't make a serious case for Remington--they've just screwed up big too many times. The .223 Rem and 7mm Rem are exceptions; Rem has developed far more potentially great cartridges (.280 Rem, .300 SAUM, 8mm Mag) that were and are commercial failures.

Where is Winchester R&D currently located?

If the dark day ever comes, where the excellent Winchester design is built by the Japanese, then I will never buy one, nor anything else with the Winchester name on it.

I remember what the Japanese did to our prisoners of war, and their drive for global domination, arm and arm with the Nazis. Damn the lot of them, I say!

I want a gun built by union men on North American soil.

Big

Yeah, and you probably want it cheaper than the Japanese made one would be...

222,22-250, 260, 280, 7MM Mag,8mm mag 416 win Could say the same
But i would have to say cartridge wise I like them both and all to much to pick!!
the 243, 264wim 308, 300 win, 338 wim and 458 wins cover it all.

Have not gone to the short mags yet

For the most part the European metric cartridges have it all over the American cartridges. The same thing can also be said for their quality of guns.

the .277cal .270 win is just not as good a bullet as the .284 the 284 has a higher BC and lots of choice of bullets.

actually if both bullets have the same nose and heel profile and the same weight the .277 will have a slightly better BC by virtue of it's slightly smaller diameter.,...but you and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference...

Winchester does have a lot of popular cartridges...30-30, 243, 270, 300 Win Mag but Remington also has some popular ones like 222,223,22-250,25-06 and 7mm Rem Mag...I think both companies have given us some good ones....

cartridge wise most of the ones mentioned all owe their development to some wildcatter somewhere
and ALL of winchester levers are owed to John Moses Browning as they just bought his designs...
sorry i'm going with Remington....
although if Ruger keeps going they way they are on cartridge development they may beat both of the old guard (not big fan of their guns)....
