Reminton 700 problems?

I have shot many animals with both my Remingtons, and if the animals could speak now, they would tell you that it was quick and painless due to the accuracy and function of the rifle, the shooter is OK as well. No problems with either of mine for 8 Years and running :D. Maintenance is probably a little above ordinary on mine though, because for me it is piece of mind to know that whatever rifle I would point at an animal will function %110 so they do not suffer or if I need to protect myself in the woods. Somy anwser is Remington 700's are a fine choice but select your model and caliber carefully. Good Luck!

I think it's pretty safe to say that the 700 is the most popular rifle out there, we all know someone who owns one. That being said, it only stands to reason that with that many of them in use, we are going to hear about problems, it's the law of averages right? If it's that crappy, why are there so many of them out there? Some great points being brought up here. I've always found it somewhat entertaining how egos and firearms go hand in hand lol.

To the original poster, there is one thing that keeps coming up time and time again here, if you do get it and there is a problem, there are plenty of after market extras to tweak it to your liking.

Have fun with it, there is something to be said about how you feel about a rifle when you put it up to your shoulder to take the shot.

I can understand bit of Remington bashing,...but bashing Chevy pickups is where I draw the line......
In June of 1998 I bought a brand new K1500 Z71 ext cab long box from Lakewood Chev-Olds in Edmonton.....I drove it 137,550 Km on the original Goodyear tires,..OK, not a Chevy thing but just had to put it out there...I like Goodyear tires too,....I changed the spark plugs at 161,000K...not because it ran badly, but I thought it was maybe due for new plugs....4 years ago in Sept when the truck had 180,000K on it I sold it to the comany and it's been our shop truck, has 230,000k now...in that time it's only had a new waterpump, a new alternator and new brakes.......still on the original starter.....what a piece of junk truck......

Have owned older 700's and have never had any problems and such a simple easy action love 'em well the older ones anyway. I looked at the SPS and there is a huge difference in feel and quality
my .02

the worst thing i can say about my new rem is the bolt isn't as smooth as the older actions. i'm sure after a 100 or so cycles it too will smooth out.

I am going to ressurect this thread because I am looking at getting a Model 700VTR Desert Recon in .308 right now. I found a good sale on them (about $150 off reg price). I have had a Mid 80's vintage Model 700 BDL in .300 win mag, and it would shoot 1 moa. I never had a single problem feeding or extracting, and the rifle never let me down up North Bear and Moose hunting.

I am a bit nervous about getting a newer model 700 now though, just because of Remingtons products recently have'nt been what they used to be. I had a Rem 870 supermag and after the warranty was up, it was so unreliable and I could just never get it to work like it did when it was new, even after replacing countless parts, and having a gunsmith work on it several times.

With that said, I am still on the fence just because I really like the looks of the Desert Recon model, and I am sure it is going to be as accurate as my needs require. I don't plan on doing any competition shooting, but I am nervous about the Remington quality.

If I found a deal on a stainless steel Savage with Accustock, and Accutrigger, I would probably jump all over that.

no need to worry. I have a newer CDL, ands it's smooth as glass. I also have a brand new sps varmint in 204.it's a tad less "finished" but It was significantly less money. There are certsinly different price points, but nobody buys a Malibu and then takes it to Cadilac to complain.

There are always 2 sides of every story ,what about the millions of sps owners that are happy I just picked up another sps and I think they are great..

Me, too. I own 2 (Don't buy ONE  Buy TWO of them) of the SPS versions and I just love them. I'm not a shiny, blued 'n glossy kinda guy. I like to haul mine on the hunting fields and sometimes they get bounced around (I fall a lot from 2 hip replacements, but like Stephen Harper; I lean to the right a little) ;) My 2 SPS rifles get used lots since I'm out hunting earthpigs. That works out to 20 to 30 times a year, which is more than many hunting rigs around this CGNutz board. :D

Hey, I also own a Winnie M70 so I ain't favoring one (read: Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge vs Toyota vs Nissan) over the other. When it comes to preventing rust, I just coat then entire barreled action/receiver with paste wax and buff it.... I'm too lazy to oil. So I keep hitting the rifles with paste wax about twice a year. Very simple! :)

I have a new (2 year old) 700 VS SF II and can say it's a great piece. Can shoot extremely tight groups with Hornady ammo. For a mid-quality piece, you can't go wrong. Only problem I have with it is, I have zero time to use it.

I have no idea as to how many 700's I have owned over the years - but one thing is for sure - every one of them shot at least sub MOA with their best handloads and the actions were smooth as glass. I had one 300 winchester mag that was so accurate it was scary. My current favorite is my .338 RUM LSS. Cloverleafs accubonds with regularity and the action almost works itself. I will buy another in the future.

Yeah, you tell 'em pardner! Don't be lumping Toyota's in with that domestic crap, eh!
Did you hear the 2010 chevys have a heated tailgate option. That way your hands don't get cold when you're pushing them in the winter.

To the OP; try using the search function in this forum. The topic of Rem vs other superior designs has been discussed at length many times here and I'm hearing other people are fed up with rem too. Then do yourself a big favour and get a Tikka. I'd rather have a Stevens 200 than the most expensive remmy.

lol

Toyota. Yeah they turned out great, eh? haha
