Reminton 710 or Savage 111FCXP3

Savage.

how old is your son? 300 win mag can be a handful for young shooters. a .308 win or .30-06 will kill anything justs as dead in all but 0.001% of hunting situations.

Go with anything other than the 710 as stated above, but for heaven's sake, don't teach him to flinch too early buy over gunning him at a young age...get him a .308 or a 30-06 as stated above....

I agree.....dont buy a 710....do a search of 710 and you'll have a good laugh. As for the .300, unless he's a big boy and your son is an older guy who's done some shooting, I'd say not to go with such a big gun. A 30.06 will do just fine and he'll become a much better shooter with it. There are plenty of guys 20-40 years old that have shot a bunch and still dont enjoy a .300 Win Mag.....shootin is supposed to be fun and not scary....

My "Little Guy" is 16 years old, 6 foot seven and 210 lbs. He handles 3" slugs from his Remington 870 all day long a long as his "dad" keeps him financed. :)
WE are looking into the "package" deal from SIR. HE likes my 308, but at 15 lbs, it's not a hunting rifle that you would want to pack up and down terrain all day long. Besides, he can pack more meat for me :)

:D Yup, I'm into modified 700's. The lad was price checking the SIR catalog for a reasonably priced rifle for Elk this fall.

Dawg, with the greatest of respect, the 710 is not a modified 700......not even close! The 710 is a piece of junk that is so far behind the 700, it's pathetic.

The Remington SPS is an economy model 700, but the 710 is junk!

Buy the Savage that Amphiboius pointed you to for $500 shipped with a scope and mounts.

If you are stuck on a 300, then get a Stevens 200 in 300 Win Mag. I bought one, brand new from SIR two months ago for $299, and the rifle shoots an inch right out of the box. :) I know at least two others who have the same rifle and are getting the same accuracy. You can now get one for $335, and that is a bargain!

Whatever you do, don't saddle your son with a 710 piece of junk!

The 710 is junk!

Phew!

I Have a 700 for precision comps. But tilting the scales at 15lbs makes a tad bit on the heavy side for hunting:) THe concept of a non-metalic reciever does give me the willy's.
The thread was put out there for comparison for two like priced packages. That and a little Father/Son time.

I do like the Accu-trigger on the Savage.

Like Why Not? said: The 710 is not even close to a 700. This one is, IMHO, a no-brainer: get the Savage.

Dawg,

I was obviously being a little flip on my previous post, but seriously there is just no comparison between the two. Get your son the Savage and the two of you go shooting!

Unless you want a detachable magzine, I would seriously consider the Stevens 200. I bought another one in 223 after the very positive experience with the 300, and it shoots regularly into less than 5/8" with any load I put into it. River Rat on the board here, was so impressed he bought three, a 223, 7mm mag and a 300 for his boys for Christmas, and they all shoot under an inch!

Yesterday, he and I were at the range for a while. My Stevens 223, with a Bushnell Elite 4200 set at 10X on it, shot both 40 gr Ballistic Tips and 64 gr Winchester Power Points into half an inch. The rifle is still factory stock, no modifications at all.

You could put the money saved over the 111FCXP3 into better optics and have a very fine shooting outfit for your son!

Best,
Ted

I love my 700. Just saving the pennies to get a AI stock for it with out my wife finding out about it. I like the Savage and it's a good bang for your buck. What I wanted to show the Lad was that before you invest into anything. Do some reseach into it. And it a good/fun time to to it on this form.

He has fired my 308. The next step for us is to borrow some rifles (30-06, 7mm Mag, & 300WM). Spend the day on the range and see what works for him the best. He's fired a buddy's 338WM and loved it. But it's alot of rifle with a expensive appitite.
