Hey Guys,
Gonna ask a really green Question here cause Im looking into getting either a mossberg 500 or a Remmington 870. But a Buddy of mine warned me about the Remmington bites being pretty brutal.

So just wanted a second opinion from maybe some 870 owners, ever been bitten?
Thanx guys

If you mean getting the leading hand pinched between the forend and receiver when cycling the action rearward it does exist and gives a really nasty blood blister. But it can happen with any pump shotgun so the other brands are not exempt, I see it once in about every 70-80 people using the 870s and they usually only do it once.
Cheers

I've owned and carried many 870s since the day I could legally purchase my own in 1988. Never had a "bite" nor a hiccup with an 870. Only complaint I ever had was the couple of years the bean counters took over the place and put G*ddamn "J-Locks" on everything. Now that they are distant, although still horrifying memory, the 870 remains the best pump gun on the market bar none.

If you get bitten, it's because you were holding the gun wrong.

That being said, you'll do well with either gun; I shoot 870s but have zero issues with Mossbergs...

Thanks Guys I appreciate the info, My buddy was talking about that little flap that's underneath the action area where you load the shells, hes says that it sometimes gets stuck.

But by the sounds of it I think I know which one Im gonna get first. :)

Yeah sometimes the cheap shells get stuck in there but you just rack the gun a little harder and she goes in.

I almost got bitten when trying to stop the bolt from going too far back so you can eject the shell but not have the shell catch arms open and load another one.

Rem Bite?

Is that when you use a crappy gun instead of an 870 and the zombies get through to you?

Seriously, never heard of it, never had it happen. I would think it only happens wbe you dont know what your doing/being careless.

Never with the standard 870 fore end, but the shorter 'police' style fore end does bite me; I have short arms and have a tough time reaching far enough forward on it to prevent this.

I think I know what he`s talking about. Every once in awhile you can screw up and not push the shell into the magazine far enough. It pops out halfway and is caught by the lifter and jams....when you go to clear it..........the pressure from the spring will pinch your thumb or finger, it hurts. It`s no big deal, but I think the mossberg loads with it up so it can`t do that.

this can happen with any of pump action guns...so, hold it properly and you are good to go.....
I have my Rem 870 for 5 year now, and will never change it to Mossberg, by many reasons......

Actually Mossbergs shell lifter is in the up position when the slide is in battery/forward position so there is ZERO chance of it biting you on a mossberg.

But for the record, I keep hearing about this lifter bit, but I can't make it happen. I suspect that this lifter bite is a rumour made by Mossberg fanboys to spread a little BS into the marktetplace. Now it may be possible, but I don't know how to do it.

No bite, gunshot :) ... or is that shotgun.

The only bite you should get with a REM 870 is to buy more REM 870s. :D

Hold your gun like a man, it's not a sausage.
