Well, I kind of like a shotgun with a simple BUIS, a sling and a bustock shell holder. My preference, but I agree, I would not add a lot of weight or encubrances, I would prefer simpler utility.
Having said that, I would disagree with you here TDC:

Semi-auto shotguns are very reliable. They had growing pains and admittedly, need to wear away old notions of unreliability, but the reputation of semi-autos are growing positively.
What makes a Remi 870 more reliable than a Mossy 500? Reputation is 90% and weight likely makes up for the rest. Remis are like bricks and they don't need to be. Nothing more than a feeling here in my opinion. Adoption by LE? Yes. Goes back decades. Mossbergs, I am told, have passed more stringent testing than Remis have...now if I could only find that reference. I think it was a 30,000 round test. Remis failed.
