Remmington 742 Woodmaster jams on last shell

Hello Gunsmiths,

I have an older Remmington 742 Woodmaster semi-auto 30-06. In the summer, at the range, it works well. But when hunting weather comes it jams when loading the last shell. The lever on the clip that is suppose to lock the bolt open, after the last round is fired, caused the last shell to partially enter the breach and jam. It is quite a trick to unjam. Last time, it fired when I unjammed it. This scared me and I have not used it since.

Is this a repairable problem? Or is this gun a write-off? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
DW_Crash

Try another mag. You may have a weak or broken mag spring or damage to the feed lips.
As for the firing when you cleared the jam, was that while the bolt was open or closed?

Got a new Clip

Gents,

The gun jams with either the old clip or one I purchased a couple of years ago. And, it only does it when its cold. Works Ok in the summer.

I would still suspect the problem lies with the magazines or the way they hang in the gun. The cold weather could shrink the metal so that marginally fitted mags then fail. I suggest that you take it to your gunsmith and describe the problem as accurately and completely as you can. He should be able to fit the mags so that they work in cold and warm conditions.
He will also be able to give the gun a once over and correct any other issues at that time.

I would be willing to say the problem lies in the magazine. I find mine very hard to clean and they do get rather filthy. Try degreasing a mag. and then using a dry lubricant like graphite on it. Also there usually is a burr raised in the slot for the lever you depress on the mag. to close the bolt.

The model 742 has a bolt latch, spring and plungers. They are in the side of the bolt. These parts can lock the action almost solid at times and make it almost impossible to open. I have fixed several recently with this same problem.

If the magazine is not the problem, the above is not a do it yourself project.

I had a friends 742 that was consistently failing to feed, randomly with any mag. Ended up replacing the action spring of the gun itself, solved the problems there. This does sound like a mag issue though, get a brand new one, (maybe your local store will let you borrow one to diagnose with) and try that. If it fired when you cleared it (i imagine the action closed on the jammed round?) either you had your hand on the trigger and weren't aware of it while clearing the jam (can happen when you get frustrated and are fighting with it) or there is something seriously wrong in the fire controls, check that the bolt is clean in the firing pin moving freely.

Thanks for the ideas and advice guys. I'll try a couple of them. But I'd really like to find a good gunsmith to take a look at it. Does ahyone know one that is familiar with this gun and it's problems?

Thanks,
