Remounting Front Sight Hoods

Hello I have a slight problem I'd like to fix. I have an Ithaca 72 Saddle gun and a M88 that both have their front sight removed intentionally or accidentally I do not know. I have two hoods and two rifles I would like to put the hoods back on but short of pulling the bottoms apart and risk miss shaping them with some pliers I have no idea how to go about remounting the hoods.

I really want to put the Ithaca's hood back on so if you know how short of a visit to a gun smith please let me know. I have no conflicting issues so its a strait forward procedure of putting it on.

Now for the M88 is a little more interesting I have a scope mounted and I'm curious that if I put the hood on would it interfere with my view from my scope? The scope is about 3 mm above the top of my receiver/ejector so it is mounted close or almost flush. Is it worth remounting it or should I just save it for a time when I might pull the scope off?

Please let me know how to put them on if you know how.

Is there not a groove that you slide the hood into from the front? Every hooded sight I have ever encountered was like this.

They normally require a bit of persuasion with a screwdriver to spread the hood enough to slide it onto the sight base.

groove was there totally didn't think of a screw driver. Tried it and it worked though I have scratched off most of the bluing on the very front of the sight on my Ithaca. The M88 just went on smooth as silk. Is there anything I should do to the hood to make sure they stay on?

Sighting in on the Ithaca is much better and easier now as I have no dominant eye to use.

No problem.

So long as they fit tight (not sliding off without a moderate amount of force), they should be fine. You could pop them back off and gently squeeze them to tighten the hood up where it slides onto the sight, but this should only be required if it is really loose.

A little dab of cold bluing, applied after proper degreasing should take care of the scuff on the sight.

Very simple mathmatics. go down to the hardware store and buy some bloody snap ring plires. Slip the jaws into the hood and apply enough pressure to open the hood just wide enought to let you slip it back on. The hood will be made frome spring steel so as long as you dont get to amped up you wont deform it and it will clamp down on the ramp as soon as you let off the pressure.
