removable mags

There's a few, ATRS, Vbull... I have an HS Precision DM kit (SA- .308) that, apart from some very minor trimming was a perfect fit in my 700 SS 5R HS Precision stock. Only drawback is that it's pricey, especially the 10 rd. mags. If you do a search you will find that some require inletting.

I want to set up my 5R SS as well, where did you buy the DM kit?

How was the trimming? Something I could just do with my dremel?

I bought it from ATRS (Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply), but I bought the 10 rd mags from P&D Enterprises as ATRS didn't have any, so they will likely have the kit as well.

The kit comes with directions on where to trim, no need for a dremel, just a small xacto knife to remove a little material on the underside cross-piece between the trigger group and mag well portion, really easy as your just trimming a little of the composite, not aluminum. This is because the mag release is a slightly different shape and the bottom metal won't seat all the way in. If you get it and have any trouble, PM me, and I will take a picture for you if you can't figure it out from the directions. Let us know how you make out.

I recently installed the HS bottom-metal kit with 10-rd magazine. No inletting of the stock was required on my 5R SS - I only had to file a few millimeters off the cross brace to make room for the mag release spring. It took all of 2 minutes with a circular file. I like the fact that I can swap the "stock" floorplate back in at anytime.

I picked my kit up from Wolverine Supplies, they are awesome to deal with. Shoot me a pm if you want more info.

Just so that we're clear, mine is the HS Precision bottom metal, just happened to buy it from ATRS, even though they make they're own bottom metal... I read my post and didn't want to confuse anyone.

Right on, Thanks Big and Sub,

I will check out P&D and Wolverine and see if I can't get something in the mail this month.

I'll post some pics once I do.

BigMofoFrog and Subneural:

I have read very mixed reviews on the HSP kit.
Criticisms include: Mags fit loose, unreliable feeds, durability issues.

These have all appeared to be second hand comments made by Badger fans. I am of the opinion USMC approval is not the single determining factor for a quality product.

It would be great to have more detailed feedback on this kit from users. As has already been said, install is much easier and makes the kit very attractive. A few hundred is easily saved by avoiding the gunsmith. But, what about actual field usage?

1) How have you both found the HSP to hold up? What have your experiences been?

2) Durability- Plastic parts? metal?

3) Are the mags single or staggered? Are they reliable? Durable? Easily cleaned?

4)Everything locks up tight and is dependable?

5) How long have you had them in action and what use do they see (Target, competitions, stand hunting, serious outdoor backpack hunting)?

Thanks. I know it's a lot of questions, but I would really appreciate to hear back from both of you. As I said, I have found it rare to hear from people who are actually using these kits.

Pictures are always great if you have the time ;)

Hey Lonely Wolf,

1) 2 trips to the range and only about 60 rds. Might be a little early to tell
2) All metal- no plastic so it shouldn't be a problem
3) the mags stagger the rounds slightly, had to make a very slight bend in on the feed lips on the 10 rounders as at 9 the rounds unloaded. not a big deal though, they work fine. Feed reliably in the rifle. Cleaning of mag... not sure, haven't had to yet.
4) Mags sit a little loose in the well, but a black elastic band around the mag at the tangs that contact the bottom of the magwell makes it tight. Although without the elastic everything still works fine- just wiggles a little. The shorter mags have a black o-ring around the base of the mag which does the same (4 rd. and 7 rd. mags.).
5) as above, just to the range for target.

I'll give you an update when I get more use out of it. Overall I'm happy with it though, particularly that it was as close to drop-in as you can get for the 5R. Next time I get a chance I'll take some pictures, I'll have to pm you as I don't have an pic uplink site yet.

Take care

Thanks for taking the time to respond to each question. It definitely helps clear up my concerns.

The HSP DBM is looking more and more attractive. I am going to have to look around and see who has it and what it is going for these days.

I have always loved my HS bottom metal and 10 rnd. mags on my LTR. As already mentioned a little work in the evening with a hand file and the kit dropped right it.

Once I had shimmed the kit my feeding was and is still flawless, but this can take time getting the right combination of spacers in the front and back.

Durability wise my kit has been great, however that may be because I Duracoted the outside of the mag. I will however state that the material used to build the mags, especially the "lips" of the mag are quite susceptible to being bent from mishandling, being dropped and such. I have had to reshape them on several occasions. The lock-up was a little sloppy and I found getting that 10th round into the staggered HS mag always difficult. I have run the HS system for two years now, shooting tactical, long range and hunting.

That being said, once I got an AICS and starting running their mags for my 22-250 I no longer have the respect for the HS kit I have on the 308. My opinion the AI mags and kit are far superior in durability. I have never installed one, but will not hesitate to purchase and have the ATRS bottom metal or other AI compatible brand installed and run AI mags on my next rifle. The extra cost up front will be well worth it! I will not go back to HS kits.

I would also like to add that I love how the release mechanism for the AI mags is outside the trigger guard, I've always hated having to fumble around inside the guard to release my mag.

Another option I believe is called Wyatt. ### international in Spruce Grove Alberta carries them among others.

Interesting... got to save the info for further use...

You could also buy a tube gun stock. MAK does offer one that takes AI magazine.
