Respectfully, that is not a good enough arguement for someone who quite possibly has only one firearm to compete with. To suggest that one sells his or her firearm at a loss (invariably) only to turn around and buy essentially the same firearm so they are 'legal' in the eyes of the ruling....well, that is a failure of judgement from those charged with making the ruling in the first place.
I find it odd that we go to great lengths to get new shooters in our sport - be it spending our personal time to encourage them, setting up and running matches, and even relaxing rules for clubs to get involved....yet this very simple and easy 'call' (imho) seems to escape us.
I would petition to have those who are charged with these decisions to continually re-evaluate their position...
