I have a nice Russian Refurb in a laminated stock. This the deal where you get the rifle shipped in a plastic rifle case for $200 all in.

I want to take off the sheallac and expose enough of the wood grain to get some stain into the wood. Then will finish with Tung Oil.

How do I get the shellac off and out of the wood pores?

I'd leave it. :) Looks good and is original. I've got an old SkS, with a laminated stock , I tried to rejuvenate. Those layers don't take sanding well, gotta remember you're dealing with end grain, and ended up looking like ####. Must have been a factory issue as well, cause all the ones I've seen show machining marks.

The gel stripper slides off too easily. I found covering it with paintball fill works best. Within a few hours it worked its magic and wiped it off. Paintball fill has alcohol in it, and it's consistency ispperfect for the job.

A can of furniture stripper will work perfectly. Slather it on, wait a minute and buff it off with a nylon pad. A scrap piece of wood makes a good scraper too. Wear good gloves. Or go the ethyl alcohol route. Not IPA.

Since you want to stain this, you will need to spend a lot of time removing as much cosmoline as possible, depending on what you want to do. It looks like your upper handguard colour isn't anywhere near the rest of the rifle so if you want them to match, you'll need full control on the staining process.

BTDT :)

I used gel stripper on both a nasty shellac 91/30 and a Chinese SKS. Slick as snot.

By the time you finish slathering it on the next section, the first is peeling.

"...get the shellac off..." It's actually the 'correct' finish. Shellac is a cheap wood finish that works well. However, as mentioned, alcohol of the rubbing variety will take it off.

What is "paint ball fill" ?? Where do I get it?

Any paintball field should have them, or walmart, or Canadian tire. Get a handful of paintballs, and break them on the stock, or they sell packaged paintball fill for grenades that you simply add water to. Real cheap. 50 cents for the paintballs, the fill shouldnt be more than $5 for way more then youll ever need.

Go to Dulux paint store or home depot and get this spray bottle:

Spray the stock down and wrap it in plastic over night. Wipe it clean with hot soapy water the following day. Allow to dry and give it a lite sand. Re-stain and clear coat to your liking.
