Removing trigger group from my SKS

So I have a 1954 Tula SKS, when I first got it I stripped it all down and cleaned the cosmoline off it. At the time I had to take a screw driver and really press hard to disengage the small button behind the trigger guard which allows the trigger group to drop free. After cleaning it I reassembled it and really had to slam the trigger group down hard to get the button to engage again. Problem now is, I want to remove the trigger group and it will not come out now. I can push the button in and it seems as though it is not going in far enough to disengage from the trigger group. I tried everything including beating it with a copper hammer, still won't budge. Any tips? Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I don't think so. Also another question, when the bolt and bolt handle are assembled together, the bolt handle piece rubs on the metal around the gas piston over top the chamber, it just rubs on one side like it is off center (which it obviously is). I can pull it to the side and it won't rub, or if I let the bolt fly it hits it hard enough to bounce over to the side and slide over it. Is this normal?

Try a hammer. I've had my SKS for over a year now and still need to whack a screwdriver onto that button to get my trigger group out, same thing putting it back in.

did you put the safety on ? for removing the trigger group

exactly this - you must engage the safety lever in order to remove the trigger group.
The release latch has a dimple which is designed to fit the tip of a bullet. I just place the cartridge on the heel of my hand and give a firm push on the dimple and the trigger group becomes un-latched...

Damn!!.. feel like an idiot :) Good thing it's built like a tank and took all my beating with the hammer....

Well thanks guys, got it out finally, wasn't even that hard. :D

I forgot that important step one time, I was beating the heck out of it then I remembered the safety .

Hahaha Yeah, me and a friend spent a few minutes trying to figure out how to get it apart, a lot of the youtube videos (and the guy in the store when I bought it) dont mention the part where the safety has to be on.

Once the safety is on, it is super-easy though.

I usually use a #2 phillips screwdriver to unlock the trigger group. Nice comfy handle makes it a snap. My 1954 Izhevsk comes apart ok, but I have to push like a sumb!tch to get it back together.

Auggie D.
