Replacement stocks for 870's

well, from what I gather (and to address Mauser Mikes point). I think an adjustable stock would be best. from what I gather 14" is standard correct? thus, I have found some from Brownwells and a few others which adjust between 13" 13.5" and 14" - which I think would allow me he versatility that I (think) I require at this time

If you're going to go adjustable then the Knoxx Spec Ops slider is probably your best bet, not only does it reduce recoil a whole lot but you get from 11.25 to 15.25 inches worth of easy adjustability. It's also available for order within Canada from TSE and probably a few others.

Thanks, I just checked out the Knoxx - very nice products

I would like one with a pistol grip - but not the AR style stock (just regular style)

Only the AR style stock is adjustable though, and they're all around 14" or more. A good pistol grip stock that would probably fit you is the Speedfeed 13".

The comment about the reach from the trigger to the pistol grip is a valid one. If you are built with slightly shorter arms what about your glove size? I find that the pistol grip areas on all the rifle stocks I've tried are almost just right for my large to X-large glove size hands. If you're more a medium glove size a wood stock and then have someone trim maybe a 1/2 cm or a hair more from the front of the stock and refit and refinish it would be in order if you're doing a lot of shooting. That would automatically also shorten the overall LOP.

... just went and tried it again. Here's some ripoffs from what I found.

"A good test for a rifle for an individual shooter is to turn the forearm (the person's forearm, that is) palm up, parallel to the ground, then lay the rifle on it with the stock along the forearm, trigger guard outward and the butt firmly against the upper arm. Bend the trigger finger as if firing, and bring it into the trigger guard. If it falls naturally on the trigger, the LOP is OK for that person."

A few other links I found pretty much mirrored that. Some word for word. You'd want it a little shorter if you're shooting with a padded shooter's vest of course.

I'm new to shotguns as well and found a quick google on "length of pull measurement" got me to a site that mentioned how to measure your forearm to find a good starting point.

to change out the handguard that comes with the new stock - do you need a tool to get the gaurd off (it looks like you do on my Rem 870 Express), does this tool come with the new stock - or do you have to buy it seperate? if seperate where can you get them

Do you mean the forend/pump handle? Then yeah, you pretty much need a tool called a forend wrench for that. You can get by without one but it's not a good idea. Either order up a forend wrench {$25-$50} or take it to a gunsmith. What stock set did you end up going with anyway?

yes, I mean the forend / pump handle.

still have not picked up the stock set yet. you guy have listed so many good ideas, and with all the PMs im getting , its taking me a while to go through them all

lets see if you anyone can narrow down my search for me.

what I want:

-fixed stock with pistol grip (not the AR style stock)
- but the stock has to be adjustable (sizes say 13 - 14)
-must be black sythetic stock

Brownells has a nice one - Fiberglass pistol grip stock (adjustable) pg 149 of their catalogue

You can use the bolt carrier instead of a foreend wrench. It is not 100% fit, but it works fine. I have done it with my 870MM and 870 Express SuperMag with no problems. I doubt that the light work of twisting the screw cap off can bend or chip the bolt carrier. I've even overtightened it to the point where I had to use pliers to get enough force. Everything is fine.

In fact, I can't recall anyone I know with an 870 ever using a fore end wrench.

I finally picked up a stock for my 870. I went with one from Brownells - its an adjustable with a pistol grip - but a normal looking stock (not the AR style) I will post a pic tomorrow.
I also picked up a forend grip to match

now the hard part - putting the damn thing on

does anyone know a website that can walk me through it?

first question to get the old one off - what type of scew driver do I use ? I cannot see the actual screws through the rubber pad on the buttstock.

also, where can I pick up one of these tools needed to change the foregrip stock - and what is it called??

thanks again to all that helped me on this. I will put a pick up of the finished product

I just unpacked the new one from Brownells, and noticed they sent a piece of steel that fits in to change it out.

I think I should have paid a little more attention on how I took the gun apart. I can seem to get the bolt assembly back in correctly... damn!
