Went on for an evening hunt this afternoon. Took a WT doe on one of my Supplemental tags (oh yeah baby). I still want to recover one of those 120 gr. Barnes TSX but no cigar yet, deadly though. But that's not what this story is about. I want to comment on this Alaskan Trader knife made by Kershaw. I picked one up for $65.00 . I comes with 3 blades, the standard one, the skinning blade with the gut hook and the bone saw. All are interchangeable in the rubber handle. What a nice surprise, handy to have all three in one neet little package. On the other hand, I also want to tell you all what a piece of #### my Bushell Yardage Pro500 rangefinder is. It couldn't range a freakin' deer at 200 yards with ideal weather conditions and new batteries. I'm so sick and tired of it, I'd like to get rid of it. Anyone wanna buy another piece of crap Bushnell product cheap? If I could reach, I'd kick my own a$$ for buying the only Bushnell product I own. If you'd like to kick my a$$, just leave a..........:runaway:

to bad about the range finder but those kershaws are sweet.I am aking the wife to buy me one for christmas.I used to like buck knives alot then went to gerber now I am hooked on kershaw

I returned mine to wally.
We should have a sort of sticky or a similat method to post the crappy stuff, you're right.

I shot a deer @230yds. The box said I should pick the deer up to 400 yds.... no way. Trees? up to 140 tops.

RETURN

I own a Yardage Pro500 and it will hit deer at 300 yards if Im real lucky. Trees at 450 if its a good day.

Just picked up an Elite 1500 ACR and it will range trees out to a kilometer just about every time. Furthest range on an animal so far is a coyote @ 418 yards.

Not all Bushnell products are crap. Anything with the Elite name is a pretty decent product.

It is good to know another outfit is making an interchangeable blade system. I don't research knives much, so far I have kept good track of mine.

My Dad won a Gerber Lock blade from Dome Petroleum back in the early 80's.
He never used it so when I started hunting he gave it to me and I am still using it. I broke the bone saw (argh) but have since learned to cut the brisket by hand with the normal blade and make due without being able to hack the pelvis open.

I have the same urge as you regarding the "B" word products, take it and throw it in the bushnell! lol I can't believe they can get away with selling such inferior crap. I went through a couple scopes and two pair of binos before I caught on. Slow learner I guess!

Had the same grief with Tascrap-o.

Take it back!

Noel

My Alaskan Blade Trader (I think that's what they call it) is by no means a real shiny and beautiful award winning knife. But it sure is a darn good value and I field dressed that doe in under five minutes I'll bet you. In my years of hunting, I've sliced many a fingers (actually usually the same one) opening up the cavities trying to not puncture the paunch. The "gut hook" is heaven sent, just like undoing a zipper and without the unpleasant experience of puncturing the paunch. Anyhow, other manufacturers also make a similar outfit, I'd highly recommend one. As for my Bushnell experience, well ...:runaway:

Thanks Crazy, I deserve that.
Noel, you'll be fine, I saw your buck....so I know you're on track.
Impala, I hope Santa's good to you.
Eltoro, yup - you're absolutely right, we should let others know. I think that the standard forums do a pretty good job of that. At least I know never to buy a Remmy 710 ( don't mean to get THAT started again). The sad part of it all is that you had to buy it at Wally World to get a "no question" back return. Try that at the local gun shop, like say "Wholesale Sports" or "Russell Sports".
Tod, I don't hunt frikin' trees.

Bushnell range finder

I also got a bushnell rangefinder, the elite model which cost me a pretty penny, its supposed to pick up to 1000 yds but only gives me a reading when it wants to. It wont even give me a reading in open land between 200-300 yds on a clear day sometimes. I have decided to leave it at home from now on, I dont need to be agrivated in the woods right before I want to make a kill shot.

The Bushnell Elite series are great rangefinders... I carry my arc 1500 instead of binoculars most times. It has the fastest and most accurate laser of any of the hunting use rangefinders. I can range the hydro wires at 200 yards with mine... and deer are no problem out to 400 yards. I have not seen one that failed to function yet... maybe your hands are shaking? Did you read the instructions? Sorry George but your a new guy and your avatar is kind of freaky....

BIGREDD: yes, I did read the manual and when I was out hunting the WT doe that I bagged the other day, I actually had the rangefinder laying on top of a fence post. It was as steady as could be. Like I also mentioned before, I'd put new batteries in it just in case. I tried it again yesterday of my back deck, it ranged a black angus cow at just over 200 yds. Any cows beyond that, nothing. :)

One word of warning for the multi-blade kershaw knife. Be gentle with it. My hunting partner has one. If you use it to do any prying (joint seperation), or that type of task, the lock becomes loose and it won't hold the blades well.

What, you dont like the picture of my mother in law? :) I am new to gunnutz yes, but I have been hunting whitetail for over 20 years. What difference does it make if a certain product doesnt work properly? I have read the instructions and I have also given it to members in my group as well and they dont always get a reading just like it does with me.

Something wrong with your rangefinders for sure fellas... As far as the yardage pro 500 goes they don't do as well at long yardage on small targets. But I have not seen one Elite come back faulty yet... take it back they are guaranteed for life ya know!
Kinda reminds of the guy this year who missed a deer ... not his fault though... he had a bad bullet.:D

It will take about that long "life" to get anything back from Bushnell. Bushnell's warranty sucks the big one, but yes they will get back to you eventually

Posts like these speak for themselves. If you have good luck with Bushnell great, but most people dont.

Problem solved, the Bushnell YP500 is gone, at a loss of course...but what a relief to not have anything with "Bushnell" written on it in my house any longer
(hey, it's just my opinion, no one has to agree with it). It's a Leupold Windriver RB800 for me, as soon as I can scratch up the dough of course. I'm a happy hunter today, tagged my cow elk in 312, one day before closing ...phew.

2fat2fly, boy talk about hitting the nail right on the head. I field dressed, actually butchered my cow elk to prepare the animal for packing out on horses. I separate both the hind and front knees at the joint by first skinning it, cutting the tendons and then prying the knee joint apart. I remembered your post very well when it was obvious that the blade isn't thick enough for the separation task. Still, a good knife though for those who don't have to contend with this chore.

I broke my kershaw serated knife that I have had for 3 years the other day.so I asked the wife if she had bought me one yet and she hadn't so i went and got one.that is a very nice knife.is there any way to sharpen those gut hooks if the need ever arises?

With good care, you shouldn't have to sharpen it for a very long time. However, I will dress mine up using a steel much the same way as you would a regular blade. Dressing it up, will reduce the need to sharpen. If you need to sharpen it, then use either a round stone or a stone from the Lansky kits.
Gut hooks are awesome, aren't they???

After swearing at a crappy Bushnell rangefinder for years my wife 'upgraded' me to the Leica Geovid 8x this last christmas--she knew I'd never drop that much cash on binoculars for myself, no matter how much I wanted them;-)

This year I put them to the test, and used them to get ranges on deer and trees out to 700 yards, even in heavy snowfall. At one point I glassed a bald eagle that was flying by, using the 'scanning' feature, and it returned a range of 565 on a flying bird not much bigger than a basketball.

With laser rangefinders, apparently you get what you pay for...
