Request for Information about 308

I have been looking into getting a new hunting rifle and want to hear from people who have rifles in 308 calibre.
 
308 is awesome. Reload and it can do amazing things. Like 190gr at 2600fps. Shoots pretty flat inside 500. I grabbed a 20” ruger for a short light gun as my 300 is 26”. Really like it so far and shoots 185gr Berger ammo really good. You can’t go wrong with a 308.
 
10's of thousands of pages on the 308 all over the net in books any site that talks rifles what's to know it will kill big game out to 400 yds know problem and further if you are a reloader it was used as a bench rest cartridge it was used as a full bore cartridge out to 1000yds a silhouette cartridge and more that's it go buy one and gain experience
 
What do you intend on hunting and at what range.

I'm assuming your new to guns to .308 is generally a good caliber for beginners.
 
I currently have two .308s, and used to have a third. I own a Ruger Gunsite Scout, and bought a Howa Superlite, both with barrels just over 16 inches. I had a 24" precision .308 but I sold it and built a 6.5 creedmoor for longer range, and less mobile shooting. Those long thick barrels get heavy.

To me, the .308 is perfect for a shorter barrel, like 16". It gets enough velocity in multiple scenarios. With a heavy bullet even 2450fps will drop a moose at close range. If you want to hunt smaller game like deer at further distances, the 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip comes screaming out at 2900fps and has a "point and shoot" (i.e. less than 6" of drop) point blank range of just about 300m.

So my advice: Get a 16" or 18" barrel. Any longer than that, and to me you might as well get a different cartridge, the whole advantage of the .308 is that it performs well in short-ish barrels.
 
pick the caliber that has the terminal ballistics you want, that has the least recoil and is the cheapest to shoot - then buy a lot of ammo and practice to put that bullet where it needs to be to be effective from various shooting positions and various conditions.

The 308 is one of those cartridges that is efficient, practical and versatile.

Powerfully enough for any north American game, yet can be loaded down so that a recoil sensitive young or new shooter can handle it.

If i could only have one, 308 would be it... you have to look at your use case though... as others have said, 308 is as common as water, and does a lot of things... but other things... might be better, if your scope is narrow.
 
Two virtues of the .308 round are firstly the widespread availability and lethality of all types and weights of different bullets and secondly the shorter throw required of the rifle action compared to any other .30 calibre centrefire rounds, which especially in a bolt action rifle can speed up the ability to get off a second and third shot. But to my mind mainly the first.

And money $$$$$ so little time and money, so many guns/calibers…. But not enough time and or money 😭
 
308 is one of the best choices.

If you want less recoil 7-08 has many fans too

6.5cm has the coming option of bizzar new blistering fast ammo, and what we have now to be called fudd ammo one day

You're gonna have to try really hard to find a centerfire cartridge that has a different effect on big game inside 300-400 yards. Pretty much only the extremes one way or another.

308 is a nice midrange/middle of the pack option. None of em are really a wrong choice or going to do anything different. I like it and 6.5 CM cause they are efficient.
