Request: lightweight 'survival rifle'.

I must have missed it among the many other fine recommendations.

I suspect that some who are in the market for a bare bones rifle are discouraged by the price.

Landed in Canada, one Pak Rifle would cost about $800 via Dave's sports. More via Questar.

I do believe that there is sufficient margin here for a local manufacturer to step up if demand is proven.

I'd be in for one, or two if they were cheap.

^not bad, although a little too 'Day of the Jackal' for my tastes :)
still going to stick with the HotShot for less than 1/2 the cost, perhaps even 1/3 after importing the other one to Canada.
for that kindof money id just put it towards an M6 Scout. to think i used to laugh at people paying $500 for these. sigh.

Sigh...

I know what you mean.

I am just going to try my hand at making my own I think.

Were you planning on modding your Hotshot or did you find it satisfactory?

the design is intriguing and a 'skeletonized' .22 like that is something ive been wanting to build, perhaps based on something like the Henry Mini-bolt, Chipmunk, etc (need to look at these more closely).

but for $800? hell no.
putting it towards an M6 Scout would be a better investment (or just buy something like a Mini Bolt and start building something of your own design).

how much are the M6 Scouts going for right now anyway? all i see are WTB ads in the EE so im assuming ~$1000?

I think that a .22 barrel is a good idea, but in .22 lr, it's a bit underpowered for a "survival rife".

Make it in .223 or better yet, .556 nato. I added the .556 nato bit to get some controversy going over the compatibility of the two rounds. Personally, I only buy rifles in .556, that's just smart.

Add a factory insert (in the stock) that allows the chamber to accept .22 lr or .22 mags.

How about some extra space inside the stock and or forestock, for 10 - .22lr or .22 mag rounds?

Still, I'm thinking that except for the inserts to fire smaller calibers, doesn't Harrington & Richards already build something very similar?

Its not really what you're looking for but the CZ455 of all variants are able to swap barrels and magwells so you can change between 22LR, 22WMR and 17HMR.

i have fired and handled the m6 scout and i would not get too excited about owning one .it is an interesting design but the squeeze trigger is terrible in my opinion . the whole thing felt bad in the hands more like a toy than a gun .the one i shot was bought at the paris gun auction about ten years ago for two hundred and fifty dollars .they fold up at an odd angle if i remember and are a unwieldy package . sorry if this sounds harsh but if they were a good idea we would be seeing them being produced .

I haven't seen this come up in a while... Here's the one I made when I wanted this :)

Takes apart and fits in my backpack.

2nd one from the bottom.
i cant believe noone has made anything like that yet?
how hard can it be to fab up some skeletonized thing like that?
the only question is, with the buttstock 'tube' unscrewed or removed (as on the action right below it), you technically still could fire it by just holding the barrel and pulling the trigger. so the 'does not fire when under 26"' seems to be the biggest hurdle on designs like these.

the 2nd 'pack rifle' from the bottom in the pic i posted earlier - you could fab something like that up super cheap, why pay >$300( shipping/taxes) for it? it looks like just a piece of aluminum with a slot cut for the trigger, a hole drilled for the action screw, and a thread tapped into the back for a piece of pipe with a buttplate welded on.

It's got a sleeved barrel as well, that's what's shaving off the weight. I would make one myself, though. I am going to princess auto on the way to work to seem what I can find.

I have a Cooey that would be good for that project except that the chamber is buggered, don't have a lathe big enough to set back and recut the chamber. It would be such a small job too. hmmmmmmmm. . . (gears grinding in my evil mind).
