Restoration of a .22 Short Rifle Mk II... found in a creek

I'll use some of my special 22 shorts for this (specially reloaded with trinitrocorditoluene-extralongrangeahool), easy no problem.

The No.4 mag jammed in there and the Philips head band screw suggest to me that it has been in civilian hands. But no doubt an interesting story behind how it ended up as a submersible. Probably an interesting story of how it was found too.

But rifles are sometimes found at creek crossings and other challenging terrain areas on snowmobile and ATV trails. If it falls off in the snow, you are pretty much screwed on finding it until spring.

I have a lever action Winchester (I think it is a Winchester) that I literally tripped over in the bush, just the muzzle and a piece of the barrel sticking out of the ground like a booby trap in amongst the leaves. The mag tube and woodwork had dissolved. I have it in the garage somewhere. It has come in handy for use as a pry bar and as a jack handle.

Very nice. That’s the first lee Medford trainer I’ve seen without the N stamp on it for the British navy. Most I’ve seen have the smle sight and top rear hand guard wood. I’ve been told they are some of the most accurate of the lee trainers but mine is nothing special.

Thanks again folks for the comments.

Was the whole stock restained ? Looks fantastic. What did you use on the wood ?

I used very fine steel wool to remove the deposits on the wood. Very carefully, doing my best to only scrub what I wanted to come off. Then, that's it; a few coats of linseed oil (in case it goes back in water for a few more decades!) ;)
