Restoration Sticky.

Well here is my Isreali K98 Mauser with a NOS 7.62 barrel. Big thanks to Richard and Richard. Yes 2 dicks worked on my rifle. One barreled it and installed the sights, one reparked it.

Yes I removed the bases. Since one hole was so so, so I got plug screws in it. Nothing I could do, short of welding and turning.

Yes I didn't get the rear of the bolt refinished. I'll be sending that later on.

Starting a restoration on a Ross MkII /w MkIII rear sight. I still prefer a proper dovetail splice the best.

She’s all done. And shoots really, really good too.

Been doing lots of work lately. Trying to re sharpen lost old skills from days gone by. It’s been slow coming back, but a very enjoyable pastime again.

First one is a MkIII that was restored from a barrelled action with a pristine bore. There were a few very interesting repairs to be done to the stock. It turned out quite nice and should shoot very well.

The second is an R-10 I rescued from ‘parts rifle’ status. Lots of labour into it as well, and it was a very satisfying project.

Nice work, Brandon!
Do you have any advice/experience on relining/rebarreling a Ross?

I picked up an E-10 in nice original condition except for the bore. Haven’t shot it yet, but I’m expecting less than stellar results based on the appearance of the rifling.
Cheers!

Mark, congrats. I have been chasing a nice E-10 for years. I have one now that I think may have been what I call a Fred Porter put together. No serial, and it doesn’t quite fit true pattern. But it’s all there.

I haven’t had to re barrel an E or R-10 yet. I’ve done a MkIII though. The barrels are tight, you need a good action wrench and a better barrel vice, then a large amount of torque on your action wrench and whack the wrench stoutly with a hammer. If I were to guess, I’d say mine took about 350ft lbs plus a 4lb hammer strike and moderate heat. They’re tight!

Thanks for the advice Brandon. Will need to eat my Wheaties if a barrel change is needed!

Would you be interested in some Woodleigh .287 bullets if I can get Prophet River to order ‘em?

Yes definitely! I’m in need of them quite badly, Hawk won’t sell to us up here and the .287s have been out of production at Woodleigh since the fire. .284s just don’t cut it.
