Restricted Transfer WTF?

It makes sense that they want people using the restricted firearms for what they were purchased for... But some of it is kinda silly, but again you can't make laws stick to some people and not others.

If someone is a target shooter, then decides they don't want to shoot anymore, its logical to assume they are content as collectors if they keep the restricted firearms for sentimental reasons. I don't see what the problem is. I was a collector from 1986 to 2006 at which time I upgraded my POL, joined a club and became a target shooter. Does that mean the two restricted pistols I registered as a collector should be destroyed since there was a change in intended use? I don't think so! Not that it matters - I sold them a while back anyway.

No, I completely agree. I mean, I see 'why' they'd want to enforce that rule. But it is pretty dumb that I can't buy a gun, use it for a while, and then decide that I just want to have it as a collectors item without having to have people come to my door for inspections. I would want to keep it around and eventually pass it down to my kids when they come of age.

It seems to me this whole gunclub requirement deal to own a restricted firearm is based on individual CFO assesment on your file.

I recently just bought my first restricted, a G17 from a dealer. It was at my front door in a week, no call from the RCMP or anything. Personally, I think I slipped though the cracks in the system.

I am not a member of a gunclub.

Well I can tell you from experience that in ONTARIO (can't say what the rules are in Civilized provinces) you MUST be a club member. I was a member of a club run by a shooting store that closed up and the owner didnt have the balls to call us all up - he just folded the store. So then me and a couple of my buddies get a nastygram from the people at Mirmichi telling me I had x number of days to surrender my restricted firearms. So I call the CFC and say WTF? is this about and she tells me the club is tits up and she tells me to hurry up and join another club (very nice lady) or the OPP's are coming a knocking....so i call up my buddies and they all said the same thing. So we joined another club and have not darkened the doorway of the scumbag who left us high and dry. So - from my experience you MUST be a member in ONTARIO>>>>> and just a last minute post - the CFO for ONT just LOVES to hold up sending out transfers.

IN FACT the CFO for ONT held up the renewal of my PAL to the very last minute even though I had sent in the info months in advance and called several times and the nice lady at CFC told me it was cleared by RCMP/CFC and that it was CFO ONT causing the problem and in fact after several calls to CFO office I finally got my new PAL on my birthday (which was the day my old PAL expired) Took 5 months total.
And I have not had so much as a traffic ticket....they were just being a pain - because they can.....

Lesson learned - the CFO for ONT is the issue

Bigbubba,
I went through the same thing with the renewal of my PAL two years ago. I'm in Quebec. I sent my papers in 4 months in advance and they waited until the last minute to issue a new PAL. and just like you I have a flawless record.

I called the CFC to finish a restricted transfer.... they ask me which club I am with.

I only told them which club I intend to join. Is this fine? They said it went to the CFO in my province (Ontario) for final review.

So whats next? Will the CFO delay the transfer until I have the membership card in hand?

Yea they'll be happy with that. My first restricted was transferred to me while I was waiting to join my range.

Here's one to muddy the waters a bit...

I finished the safety requirement and joined one of the handgun clubs at the range where I shoot last week (11th). Filled out the paperwork and joined the club on the 12th. While talking to the membership guy I was told that there was no point applying for my LTATT untill I bought a restricted gun.

I thought this was a little strange since the ATT covers all restricteds but was told that if he applies for my ATT when I don't own a gun he will get a letter back from the CFO saying that I don't need an ATT at this time.

I bought 3 and am going to call in tomorrow and complete the transfers as well as having the club send in my ATT application. Time will tell how long I have to wait for all the paperwork to go through...

In short, as I see it you should be a club member to buy the gun BUT if you join a club you have to own a gun BEFORE they can get the LTATT? It kinda seems a little strange but thats the rules in Ontario...

I joined the club first and now the club is waiting to put in my LTATT while I will be waiting to complete the transfers for my restricteds One big waiting game LOL.

A restricted transfer ALWAYS goes to your CFO for final approval.

That they said that doesn't necessarily mean there is any problem. Having said that, your CFO will have to be satisfied too, and this process (of your satisfying your CFO) might result - effectively - in a delay. This delay can be minimized by your being a member of an approved club.

Join the Club.
