There is a guy in Lanark that collects deer hides to have tanned and he makes jackets, slippers, belts, etc. from the hides. This is not the "hats for hides" but something he had been doing for years. In exchange for your hide, he gives you a ballot for a draw at the end of the year. Prizes are things he has made out of the leather, and he donates $1 for every hide to the children's hospital in Ottawa.
Anyways, I heard from a friend that knows him well that last year on opening day he collected just over 450 deer hides. This year on opening day he had about 150 hides.
Looks like they will be giving out less anterless and extra tags next year and possibly for years after that...
