Returned from the Deer Camp. Tough week in 56 !

There is a guy in Lanark that collects deer hides to have tanned and he makes jackets, slippers, belts, etc. from the hides. This is not the "hats for hides" but something he had been doing for years. In exchange for your hide, he gives you a ballot for a draw at the end of the year. Prizes are things he has made out of the leather, and he donates $1 for every hide to the children's hospital in Ottawa.

Anyways, I heard from a friend that knows him well that last year on opening day he collected just over 450 deer hides. This year on opening day he had about 150 hides.

Looks like they will be giving out less anterless and extra tags next year and possibly for years after that...

We were in 57 also and saw very few signs of deer. Skunked ! I did see a bunch of Grouse though..

Oh, well - we had a good time, good food, good drink, and it's always nice to get away from work for a week :D

We got skunked the second week in area 56. Mild temperatures and lots of rain. But, the last Saturday, the temperature dropped and 20cm of snow fell.Compare this picture to the first one in this thread! I thought we might be stuck in camp another day.

I feel for you guys...

We're having the opposite problem. The Alberta government is practically begging us to buy extra licences and take a few more deer. In the last year that they have stats for, there were 20,000 collisions with deer in the province.

I was going out for a 1 week hunt. Had to have a new furnace installed in the RV and ended up getting a flat on the way out. By the time I got there, I had lost 4 days already. We went out on a scouting mission when we arrived at about 4 PM - saw 6 deer in about half an hour. Crashed early and got up two hours before dawn. Found a nice tree to sit against where I had a pretty good view. Had an 8 point whitetail within an hour of sitting down. This is a shot of him trying to jump into a tree later that morning:
