Revamp Saskatchewan's Big Game draw

Are they all putting in for the same species and zone at the same time?

I know of a guy who has been in Super A for one species for over 10 years. I got drawn 3 years ago. Next year I have the same status as him. In my opinion not right

My opinion is that , once in Super A , you should get a point each year unsuccessful.

My thoughts, worth what you paid for them

Has he been applying in the maximum number of zones for that species every year for ten years? And however many zones he applies for, has tried he tried different ones some years?

If what you do doesn't get the results you want, perhaps persistence isn't the best course.

I like the current system...IT forces people out of their home zones. Otherwise certain groups of hunters would always be drawn amd then they just "party" hunt on a couple of tags.

Also guys in those Zones will have their "eyes" on certain animals they see or others have seen. Therefore they will ONLY put in for that zone to target that trophy.

Select 6 Zones and you will have better chance at being drawn...

I know zip about your SK draw system, but ours in ON is biased and broken too... I can not fathom why, in this age of computers, they can't manage a "preference point" system. The applicant gains a preference point for each year of unsuccessful application. Calculate the number of tags for each region or zone and start handing them out to the applicant with the highest number of preference points, working your way down until the tags run out for that area... simple... fair (ish).

Kinda had that figured out but thanks for pointing it out

The fact is that in almost every draw it is over subscribed by SUPER A applicants. Do the math , someone is getting screwed

Exactly

No one is getting screwed. It is a lottery, each person in the SUPER A has the same odds of being picked.

Yeah I got that point too

My point is that I , and others, believe that your priority should continue to increase each year that you are unsuccessful and NOT top out at Super A . This is especially true with the over subscription now.

Simply put I think that someone with more years in Super A should be drawn, if species and zone preferences are the same, before someone with less.

Your opinion is obviously different. I respect that

It's almost like if someone was first in line and waited the longest they should be picked first... ;)

I wish it was a total lottery instead of the old boys club it is now, difficult if not impossible for any one new to get a draw. Unless you know someone.

WTF?? Don't know where to start here....

Our draw works fine. If you want a better chance to get drawn more often then pick zones no one applies in then. Or pick multiple zones. You are fortunate in Sask to have a regular season for all species and can hunt every year. Any tinkering is a step toward reduced regular seasons and "preference points" that allow rich people to buy a better chance.

Seriously, draws each year are based on species population. Just because you change the system doesn't mean there are any more animals. The same number will get drawn. Change for the sake of change is rarely a good thing. In fact allowing the government to change the system will mean they will build it so they have more control, take more of your money and make things harder to do.

It is currently like; 1000 people enter a store at the same time. Half the people grab 1-8 items and go stand in the express check-out line... the other half walk around the store filling their carts until they won't hold anymore... and then they walk straight to the front of the "express" line... when you object, they say; "Hey, we entered the store at the same time!"

You can obviously tweak that analogy, but the point is in there.

The population of Sask went up. There is huge increase in new hunters.

Just be thankful we have Regular seasons.

IF you want to hunt a single zone....a choice zone for whatever reason you have to wait.

The numbers are NOT going to change nor will changing the system work.

I would rather get drawn 1 time in 5 years picking 6 zones....then getting drawn 1 time in 10 years for 1 zone?

You are still going to have 3000 entries and 50 or 100 tags....IF 2500 guys are on a preference point system your odds still are not good.

A preference point system means there are NO "ODDS..." Except in the first few years until the numbwrs sort out...

When it is your turn, you get it... it may take awhile, but you will get it when you deserve it.

In a situation of increasing applicants and decreasing tags, the "wait in line" system (priority points) can take a lifetime.
The idea of a lottery is that you have some chance while applying all those years. A lottery with randomness inevitably has some outliers for frequency of draw.
Every system has its proponents and its detractors. You do on have to look very far on the Internet to hear the negatives of a priority points system.
There is no jurisdiction where all the folks are universally happy with the system for distributing coveted big game tags.
Some adjustments are proposed for the Saskatchewan system to make it fairer for those unlucky folks who are not drawn from the highest priority pool over many years.

So they want to make it less fair for some within the same pool and say they are making it more fair.
