Review of an ATRS Custom .308 Build w/Range Report

What kind of shooting mat is that, and where do you get it? Nice piece of kit (the rifle)

Condor ( copy of Eagle ). Available quite a few places inc ebay. Voodoo Tactical make one also which IMO is a bit better if you lug more than just the rifle around. I have both but usually use Condor at range since other stuff in in separate gear bag but if outside VT gets the nod.

I like to argue with Jerry that Sightron are not as good as NF - but seriously, they are half the price and are really friken good. No doubt, Sightron are great value and this one is really, really close to my NF in same mag range. Heck. It may bne just a bit bet........ No, I can't admit it.

I would have to strongly agree that the Sightron SIII's are much better (in clarity and focus) then the NF scopes...at any price range. I owned 2 NF NXS's and the day I looked through a Sightron SIII was the same day I sold off my NF scopes and bought a Sightron. No way I could justify the cost of the NF when the Sightron out-preformed it. NF still puts out a nice product, but the value-per-$ just isn't there for me.

Sightron scopes are most definitely worth the money...My 2 cents

...Nice rig ;)

Now you've got me curious about the Sightron SIII scopes. I have three Nightforce scopes and why I switched to the NF was because of the finer details I noticed. Things like the 4" of eye relief and it's very easy to get on target without having to have your eye perfectly lined up, the robust turret caps that are very precise, the easy to crank on power ring together with the eye piece so you can grab it with your gloved hand, the reticle (NPR-1) makes total sense, I can be accurate with it and of course it speaks the same language as the turrets do. (the big problem I had with the MK4) That pissed me right off!!
If Jerry is willing to send me one to test, and send back, I'd be willing to put one on my custom 308 and 50cal and give you guys some feedback.

Thanks for sharing your gun review with us. I also like reading about the details that went into a nice build.

For those who may be interested, I am planning an optics review - covering off cheap stuff, medium, expensive and top-shelf. Will write it in the next couple of weeks.

I have three of each now. The nf is hands down a better scope. but the sightron is a better value. Just because a rock looks the same through both at 200m blah...blah...blah, means f-all!

I'm under the same impression but am willing to take comparative photos through scopes at the same target, and run through the scopes side by side so everyone on the forum can decide for themselves. I'm all about saving money where I can but I've bought product in the past that was 60% of what I had originally wanted and regretted not just saving the couple hundred extra to be proud of the purchase and the quality of product i worked that much harder to own in the end. Kind of like the guy that started this thread I guess. In my books, this gun has the parts including the manufacturer to make it worth owning. While reading thread the only piece of the puzzle that looked out of place was the scope.

Nice rifle, and great review! I always enjoy reading your reviews on precision rifles.

You should review a tac-ops next, would love to see one of your write-ups on that rifle.

Is that nightforce/sightron joke from another forum perhaps? If so, I happen to know the particular thread you are referring too. If not, quite the coincidence.

I've already commented on the bag/mat in an earlier post. Re other reviews I would love to review other things but I only review what I own and the money tree in the yard isn't blooming at the moment !

The NF/Sightron joke(debate) is an old one. When it arrives, I will be putting a S+B PMii 12-50x56 on the Stiller - that will end the discussion :D

Winnipegger, I asked the same question. :slap: lol

But isn't SEEING what an optical device is all about? Oh by the way, alot of our seeing is done at 800, 900 and 1000m.

Last time I 'looked', I could resolve and adjust my aim 1/2" at 1000m's and yes, I know that because of the scaling of the target and I measured.

from the perspective of a F class and LR shooter, seeing and tracking is everything to me. I have no need to jump out of helicopters at night nor build a tent using my scope as a hammer (not a good idea anyways).

Being able to see and aim precisely AND know my scope adjustments are going to put the bullet where I want 1st shot IS what I want from a scope. So far, the Sightrons in a variety of formats and over many scopes have done just that.

Read my article on scope testing. None are babied.....a few big name scopes will not pass my tests.

I also, on rare occasion, get the pleasure of standing out in the rain for several hours while having our fun. So far, neither my scope nor those around me at the matches have any issue with internal fogging or lose of performance.

And speaking of other scopes, visit an F class match and you will see a pretty decent percentage of Sightron scopes being used. A few of the matches I was at had approx 50% Sightrons. Some were topping the rifles from the better shooters in Canada.

coincidence? Budgetary restrictions? Doubt it.

For what I use a scope for, the Sightron offers features and benefits other brands, Including NF, can't. Are these the end all of scopes? Of course not... They aren't perfect and some of their new stuff has some really silly quirks.

But basing a judgement on price alone isn't giving the product its dues.

Buy the product that suits your needs and enjoy but for those that spend time behind a Sightron, there seems to be alot of very happy customers.

And some end up on the podium not by luck alone......

Oh, me thinks the NF/Sightron debate will continue like the Rem/Savage for a good long while. Eventually, the brand will be well enough represented that no one will really care anymore.

Remember when it was a Leupold/NF debate?

4 yrs ago, saying a savage could make an accurate rifle usually left my nomex well charred. Now, there are more builds discussed here then Rem's. There is always a resistance to change especially when it involves "less to get more".

I am truly excited about seeing your S&B. My one and only experience with this brand was sublime and if they continue with that goodness in a super high mag scope, might be worth breaking the piggy bank to get.

And yes, NF/Sightron vs S&B for optics (based on my past 1 experience) - there is no discussion.

What are the odds that the knobs rotate the "right" way and can you get 1/8 min clicks?

Any ETA?

Jerry

Jerry if you're willing to send me a Sightron to play with on one of my rifles, i'll leave a deposit for the test drive. It can be one of your personal scopes with rings so I can drop it onto my pic rail and try it out. If you're a firm believer in your scopes, who better to try one out then someone that's invested heavily in the direct competition.
