Rifle calibers and hunting

LOL
Thanks for all the info.
So I'll just keep my 308 for now, if the need arises I'll get something more powerful.
According to another friend that is an antigun, I can use 223 but there's a catch, it has to be an assault style clip rifle full semi auto, then I can even shoot down Satellites. He toldz me the rifle makes a difference.:bangHead:

From 3030 over theyre all acceptable for moose given range and skill. Some even use a 243 but choice of bullets and placement are essential. Personally id start at the 25s even though they are on the light end as well as the 270 for me personally but i prefer heavier bullets for heavier game. A 308 is fine. Its actually boring because its usefull for all in north america that youre likely to hunt. Bison and muskox im not sure if it meets the minimum standard as i dont hunt them. Im sure the northern guys could be more precise on that issue. A 308 is cheap to feed. Found everywhere. Chambered in almost everything offers a wide selection of factory offerings both in rifle and ammo choices. Its just basically a slower 3006 which is a slower 300wm theres other differances but they fire the same diameter bullet just as varying speeds

I think the chart would serve as a guideline for new hunters. Most whom have commented in this thread have experience with the various calibres and hunting, etc. I agree the chart is a "joke" to experienced hunters but to a new person look at it as a guideline, and then ask questions as the OP intelligently did.
308 good for most North American game. As mentioned above Alaskan Moose, Brown Bear, Polar bear I would feel more comfortable with something bigger.
It comes down to what you feel comfortable shooting and doing what it takes to make a humane kill with your rifle.

I know an old Indian hunter that hunted moose with a 22. All shots through the eye at close range. None ran away. He knew what he was doing.

Karl Stumpfe (African PH) once told me you could kill a Lion with a 243 if it's resting, but if you get it a bit peeved then you better have something with a hole for a calibre.

well the question is answered :)

I hunt moose with a 300WM but a 308 is perfectly adequate, I prefer the 300WM because the ground I hunt is very open and a 300m shot is sometimes required, I also use heavy bullets 200Grn Accubonds

Now as a minimum for moose I would say 25-06 or faster in the quarter bore would work with careful shot placement and a good bullet. Any 30cal with 30-30 or more energy is also fine for moose within reasonable ranges.

6.5x55 is popular in the Scandinavian countries for moose.

25-06 does make a fine deer gun, I also use accubonds in my 25-06, 110 grn.

243 while legal for big game is a little light in my opinion for moose, while just dandy for deer and lighter animals.

He's out to lunch or has a severe case of magnumitis.

For ALASKAN moose, something bigger than .308 wouldn't be a horrible idea. For EASTERN moose, which is what you'll be hunting, .308 is more than enough at any reasonable hunting range. Moose die easy, easier than deer IME.

It's enough to make you wonder how all those moose were killed with .30-30s and .303s before they invented the .300 WM in the early 60s.

Don't forget about the millions of .303 Lee Enfields that were given away after the war to the natives and Inuit, and sold to poor farmers for 6 bucks each. The inuit are still using many of them today.

i've made more one shot kills on moose deer and black bear with my dad's old no1 shtle 3* than all my other rifles combined :)
retired her last season due to failing the field gauge but will remedy that soon enough. She is my favorite walking rifle by far.

I fixed the chart for you.

My $0.02, you can't go wrong with a .308. It's like hot sauce!
Cheers,

That said, I know a guy that only shoots .270 Win. He's taken coyote, wolf, black bear, deer, and moose with a .270 WIN. He rolls his own and his rifle is an extension of his body.

I just bought a Win Model 88 from a friend a short time ago. He took a moose with it and his Dad before him took at least 2 with it back in the day.
.308 with 180g in quality ammo , not a problem with a well placed shot.

Had a nice Win 88 also in .308 and I really regret selling it :(

That chart is the kind of thing guys will show their wives to prove they need another gun. Except for a varmint bullet that doesn't penetrate very well or far, almost any centerfire will do for hunting big game provided the hunter respects the range of the cartridge and has the skill required.
