Rifle calibers and hunting

See 375 Ruger isn't even listed...no way its the king! looks like i have to sell my 8mm rem mag, 416 ruger, 30 nosler, 7-08's and others as they aren't listed either.

Thousands of Moose and Black Bear have been taken down by 30-30 and .308 in this country. .308 and 30-06 were considered the go-to moose rounds for years before the ###y .330+ magnums were readily available here..

I'm planing to start hunting next year and I was talking to a friend about suitable calibers for Moose and Deer. He is a hunter from Quebec.
I found a bit weird when he said my 308 was not suitable for moose unless at short range and for moose I'd need at least a 300winmag. He has a 270win for deer and a 7rum for moose. So I decided to google it later instead of arguing about something I have no experience about and found this:

So a question for the experienced hunters out there...
Is this chart exaggerated?
Or a 308 is really not suitable for Moose?
If I go hunting next year it will be in Ontario.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

MNM

that makes me laugh
the 30-30 has probably taken more moose then any of the other calibers on that chart
as for the 308 I personally have taken over 14 moose with a 308 only once did I have to use more then one shot
if you know yer rifle and learn how to shoot accurately you wont ever need anything larger then a 308 in my opinion
I know people who only ever use a 243 for elk and moose and they are successful every year
they only suggest those calibers due to a marketing scam
and they have inferiority complex due to having a small pecker

Some truth there. That comment may prompt others to step forward. Then again, maybe not!

Strange but the only magnums I have ever hunted with briefly were wildcats based on the WSM case and the 375 H&H.
other than that it has always been smaller cartridges .
been hunting almost exclusively with the .303’s since 2010.
hunted with the Enfields when I was younger and like the Brit for deer and moose.

hart is one of those that are made for duffers and those new to shooting. Just like back in the day CIL used to put shot recommendation on a side of ammo box as to what size to kill what...

That chart is silly....

That chart is made to convince you to buy more guns because whatever you have already isn't appropriate for what you want to hunt.

Every cartridge has its limits and is humanely lethal within them. Every hunter has his(her) limits and is humanely lethal within them. Know those limits, get close enough, shoot straight.

So far I have killed moose with - .25-06 rem, .270win, .30-30, .308win, .30-06 spfd, .300winmag and .338 winmag, .375 Ruger. Each caliber dropped the moose quickly. The hammer of Thor wont kill a moose if you dont shoot it in the right spot. Focus on good marksmanship, and most legal centerfires will drop a moose. Contrary to what books and writers say, even big moose are easy to kill if you hit it right.

How about this one..............would 762x39 out of a 19” barrel rifle be sufficient to take wolf at 250-300 yards at a high vantage rested? Cz527 or 858???gota M10x could mount a primary arms 1x6 in 762. What you say

I took a good sized whitetail with a 7.62x39 out of a 16.5" barrel. It was a one shot kill from 304 yards with a Hornady 123gr SP. The bullet travelled through the lung cavity with minimal expansion. It can be done but it's really pushing its limits in terms of energy and trajectory. I was using a 2-7x scope.

Sounds to me like the "friend" has only read stories about hunting Alaskan/Yukon moose and the story where John Nosler's 300 H&H bullet failed on a moose.
Anyone who has hunted moose across Canada can tell you (as found in the 8 pages of replies here) that the 308 is perfectly adequate for moose, given proper bullet placement and within reasonable shooting distances.
Yes, they have been harvested with rifles from 22 caliber to 50 caliber (and most likely bigger), Does not mean that dome of those cartridges were great moose cartridges.
My own native grandfather harvested moose with the 22lr. He tickled 'em in the ribs, sat down, rolled a smoke, and then went and got his moose, who would have expired after a short run, and laid down as it wasn't feeling well. My native grandmother used slugs in her single shot 410 to harvest moose. Mostly because this is what they had on them at the time. My grandfather's main hunting rifle was a Marlin 30-30. He harvested more moose, deer, bear and beaver with it than I will ever shoot. I guess raising 13 kids on a trapline will do that!
To date, I have harvested moose with the 30-06, 6.5x55, 375 Win, 270 Wby, 338 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 270 Win, 7MM STW, 300 WSM, 358 Win and 6.5 Creedmoor, and archery equipment (recurve and compound bow).
I have to say, that rifle hunting moose with my leveraction 375 Win is the most fun! Furthest distance on moose with this rifle has been 120 yards.
