My daughter wants to go hunting deer (rifle) this year.I told her when she
passes her hunter safety I will buy her a rifle.I am really leaning towards the
savage youth package .243 for $429.99 at SIR.I know the scope is not the best but probably a good package to get her started. They also have the remington 710 for $414.99 but for the extra $15.00 I think I would be better off getting the savage. What are your opinions?

How about the 7mm08 in a stevens 200? Recoil is light and one can allways add a limbsaver recoil pad. I paid 320 bucks for my rifle

Only Bartell would defend such a piece of s**t rifle! But then again because it is a Remington he probably owns three of them :p :p :p

I hope you are only kidding :D

No, no, he is absolutely serious! He has quite a few Remington 710s. He loves them, and actually prefers them over his 700s.

That's why he never takes them in the field. He doesn't want to get them scratched or anything like that. Keeps them at home in his safe. :D

Thats what I figured :D

Just shocked that he never gave any ballistics in his last post. We all know how Tod love those ballistics programs :p

Monty, if you want to know why the 710 is a piece, have a look at one in person, or hey do a search on the topic. You will find out all you need to know.

The Remington 710 is a FINE piece of Remington engineering in Remington's attempts to produce the crappiest American made hunting rifle on the market. They employed a large team of their most inexperienced engineers in their bid to outdo the Mossberg ATR, Savage 110 and the illustrious NEF Handi-Rifle.

From the "self lubricated" [sic] symthetic bolt guide to the locking lugs being machined into the barrel, rather than the cheaply made cast low carbon steel receiver - the Remington 710 never fails to disappoint.

Remington insiders went a step further by claiming in their ad copy that the barrel-integral locking lug recesses and the cheapest/lowest quality possibly receiver is actually a selling feature by claiming:
the Model 710 not only breaks new ground for value-priced rifles, but for firearms engineering and production as a whole. Principal among its many remarkable features is a first-ever bolt-to-barrel lock-up design. The rear of the Model 710 barrel is machined specifically to mate with three unique locking lugs on the bolt face. When the bolt is fully engaged in the forward position, it locks directly and securely inside the barrel — rather than the receiver — for unprecedented strength.

The one area that the designers failed at in vying for the crappiest rifle of all time was in incorporating a 60 degree bolt throw rather than the traditional 90 degree throw. I'm guessing this actually redeeming quality was included more by accident than by design in the quest to produce this piece of turd.

I would go with the Savage but in the 7-08 the 243 just isn't enough gun IMHO. If you can find something in a .260 Rem, 6.5x55 or 7-08 they are much better deer cartridges than the .243 and have the same light recoil for a begining shooter .

+1 ta that. Maybe even a .270.

Or what the hell, go 7mm rem mag. She can use reduced handloads, or remington 'reduced recoil' boxed ammo, and upgrade to the stronger stiff if/when ready.
