Rifle Recoil table .45-70 a pussy cat?

I just checked the loads I used for my pre guide gun 1895 Marlin in my recoil calculator. A 400 gr bullet, with 52 grs of powder and 1850 fps proiduces 41 ft/lbs of recoil energy. A typical .30-06 with a 180 gr bullet pushed by 50 grs of powder to 2700 fps equals 22 ft/lbs. I bet you notice the .45-70.

Okay sealhunter I owe you one, I just read Kim's excellent essay "The pussification of the western male" Talk about nailing it! As time permits I'll read more from his new site, looks very interesting. I'm still laughing at that essay thanx for the heads up.:D

Would love to read that. Where is this available?

www.theothersideofkim.com is his website, it's big. If you just enter "the pussification of the western male" in your address bar you'll get right to the article. Enjoy.

Did just that, and found it. All I gotta say is brilliant!
I get so pissed off with the way men are treated these days. This guy tells it like it is.

Wetcoaster;

There is a good article on the 45-70 and Ruger Model No. 1 in the latest issue of Outdoor Edge. Do you get that magazine yet? If not, I will try to remember to give "your boss" a copy of that article next week (at work) to give to you.

Gunsmoke

That would be good, I'll look and see if I have recieved the issue. Nothing like riling up the troops here about the oh so manly 45-70 eh?:p

Oh and about "the boss", I don't think "the boss" would be all that supportive of a "new" firearm just now, in fact I believe "the boss's" words were no more new guns unless it is a pop gun (.223) for "the boss". However "the boss" didn't say anything about a conversion so pick your words carefully! After all, every man needs a firearm that can throw bullets the size of your thumb in an arc that resembles the stream from a man with a prostate the size of a grapefruit. Who does "the boss" think she is that she can stand in the way!:D

After re-reading the above statement maybe I need to read the pussification of the N.A. male essay that is being talked about in this thread.

I bought a marlin 1895XLR in 45-70 last week. I put a part box of 300 grain factory loads through it. I will admit that I was expecting more of a kick. While it's only a factory load, it was very very easy to shoot. Much less kick than my .270WSM. It is a pussycat with the factory loads I shot.

In fact, it was so soft, I questioned it's ability to take down big game. That is, I did, until I put a few rounds through some 4x4 posts.

ruger # 3

Ruger #3...6.75 pounds ...58.0 gr Reloder 7...405 gr rem...2100..2140..2121 fps..1.30 inch/100 yd/3shots...

Sako 416 Rem Mag..8 pounds...76.0 gr H4895...400 gr Hornady...2370..2366..2374 fps..1.25 in./100yds/3 shots....

Shooting 20 rounds at the range out of my sako is preferable to 20 rounds of this 45/70 load...

"Boomer " states 400 gr @1800 fps is 41 ft/lbs....so 2100 fps is when (at the bench) the fore grip almost twists out of your hand on recoil......

Or you could load 14.8 gr Unique..Lee 500 gr cast.. 1050..1043..1061 fps..2.0 inch/3 shots/100yd and shoot all day.......mild or wild ,the 45/70 can be whatever you want..

hs45/70......your mileage may vary

HS4570,

Ruger #3- 55.84 Foot pounds
Ruger #3- Factory loads 27 Foot pounds
Sako- 62.89 Foot pounds

Nothing like a little better stock design to take the sting out. Those #3s must have been designed by a sadist.

:D
How about doing the same calcs on 500gn @ 2000fps!
I made believers out of a few people with that load!

re short barrel and more recoil?

Lower velocity due to a short barrel and more recoil?

Is it not less recoil on the shoulder ( less velovity right).

More precieved recoil due to increased blast felt by the shooter caused by the short barrell and echo caused by a roof overhead at the range.

Therefore this can be helped with good ear muffs and saftey glasses, right?

Heck an my local range the roof has a peek directly overhead.
A guy shooting a .338 15 feet away gets uncomfortable.

Senior,
I need bullet weight, gun weight, powder charge weight and velocity and I'll fix you up.

i got catnthehat to stick a good recoil pad on my #3. took the sting right out of it.
but it's not the rifle for me to head to the range with 50 rounds of reloads.
i have a williams sight on it to keep the weight down cuz that's what i wanted. a thumper that's a light weight.
the trade off is recoil, but how many shots do you take hunting?? i just use federal 300 grain factory. can't be bothered reloading for it.

So you think it stings with factory 300gns bullets @ 12-1300fps  :D

hi senior
where did you get that velocity from? probably the old trapdoor springfield loads.
try the federal site ... plus i think they have about 3 loads for 45/70. one for trapdoor, one for others, one for dangerous game (500gr)

federal 45/70 300 grain muzzle velocity 1880 fps, energy 2354 ftlb

yes i think it stings but each to his own. i'm a bit of a wimp regarding recoil.
for some reason i find i shoot better when i'm not being knocked around. don't know why- i'm getting old i guess.

Senior,
I'd recomend firing it with a real long string. However.......

6 pound, 500 bullet,49 grains of powder, 2000 fps.....75.55 foot pounds of recoil.

6 1/2 pound rifle, all else the same....... 69.74 foot pounds of recoil.

Have you chronographed these loads?
