Are there any websites I can visit that will give me honest reviews about various riflescopes?

I would like to find more information about:

Bushnell Trophy/Banner/Legend
Simmons Pro-Hunter
Tasco Varmint/Tactical scopes

I am looking for a scope that has high-magnification, variable power (eg: 6-24X or somewhere around this range) that I can mount on my Savage .22LR. I'd like to have the Mil-Dot reticle, but a normal duplex reticle would be ok. Any sites where I should start my research?

My bushnell legend 5-15X40 mill dot is the only low price scope that does not get blurry on the high magnifications that i have used/handled(my experice is limited). The only problem I would see is the size/weight of it for 3/8 dovetail mounts. Im reaonably satisfied with my 4-12X40ao banner dusk and dawn on my 10/22(weaver rail though).. but it gets a little unclear at higher magnifications.

Unless your savage shoots under 1/2" at 100yards you will not need any higher than 10X

I like to set my scope to a magnification that will put most of the bullets under the croshairs...

Hope this helps.

I have a Legend 5-15...the highest magnification range I'd ever consider, and the lowest end scope I'd spend money on...it's good bang for the buck.

My gun is a Savage MK-II BV, and I was getting at least 3/4" groups at 100 yards (with Remington Thunderbolts, of all things!) With quality ammo, I can put up smaller groups than the Thunderbolts @50 yards, but I have not shot quality ammo at longer distances yet. I think for my needs, the Legend 5-15X will work. Thanks for the advice guys!

No, I have not put any quality ammo through the gun. The thunderbolts, surprisingly, were fairly accurate during the summer. But, in winter they do not shoot nearly as well, maybe 3/4" at 50 yards. They also have lots of fliers. I stopped by Wholesale in Winnipeg Thursday, and picked up a bunch of different ammo. Tomorrow or Monday I'll try and see which gives the best results. BTW,where do you get Eley ammo in Canada?

gunblast has a review of the TASCO, I bought one based on thier review but have not tried it out as I have not gotten my mount yet.
My impression of the scope is that it loses image quality at the high end of magnification 24X excellent at the bottom of the scale it is mil dot at 8X and the image quality is excellent there.

How well it tracks zero that I will not know till I get it out on the range.

I would seriously consider some of the mueller options.

I've just been thru testing a couple of their scopes, and i'll be writing a reveiw, but it would be fair to say the review is quite favorable. the scopes are better than i expected. Well worth looking at. There is a Canadian distributer for them - its on the mueller website. Amusingly, he's in winnepeg. :)

That' was it.

That red dot option of theres sure seemed like a gimmick, but once you use it.. damn it gets addictive quick if you're hunting :) and it doesn't matter if there's no batteries, there's still the black dot. You can't really see the red dot at all even if it's on in bright daylight, but in low light it's a godsend.

The tac 2 will stand up against leupold 3's for light and colour. A little more pricey than most of their other ones, and no red dot, but one hell of a value for sure. And they're tough - i put 'em thru hell (rain, rough riding, recoil, subzero to warm, etc) and they still hold zero perfect.

I'd buy one without hesitation for a new gun. The tac 2 is especailly impressive for the money, but the 'standard' one impressed me as an excellent value as well. Very positive controls, good optics and clarity.

Foxer - We've discussed the 2-7X32 in other threads. Somewhere along the way I got the mistaken impression that it was a 2MOA dot, but I see now it is listed as only covering 1" at 100 yards which would suit my needs very well.

My experience with red dots has been limited to eotech's and other red dots with no magnification. I've found that I'd like a smaller dot for more precise shot placement, and some magnification to be able to use the scope out to 200-300 yards at times. The 2-7X32 sounds perfect but I have one concern. I know from our discussions of your .303 that you've used the standard red dots as well, so you are the perfect person to answer this for me.

With a 1X red dot (no magnification) I enjoy the super fast target aquisition of being able to look with both eyes open in dense brush or other tight quarters. I also like it on my bear gun after dark when using a flashlight to illuminate the target, as I can clearly see the point of aim.

Do you find that using this scope on 2X magnification allows you to still use both eyes open when in close quarters, and do you think it would work as well as the 1X red dots when using a flash light for illumination?

TIA for sharing your opinions on this. :)

Do you find that using this scope on 2X magnification allows you to still use both eyes open when in close quarters,

Yes... and no. It's different. The Mueller has very good short distance performance (some scopes have trouble focusing really close in at higher powers, but this one's good). When you have both eyes open, you see the red dot clearly but your eyes won't be able cope with the '2x vs 1x' difference.

However - you'll find your left eye naturally looks around, giving you that 'wide tracking' view and it keeps the red dot on target, then when you look thru the right eye, the scope and dot is already on target and you continue tracking with your scope eye.

It's a little hard to explain it well - and it takes just a little practice to get used to. It's faster by far than a normal scope, but it's just not as natural as the 'two eyes open' red dot from a 1X scope. Also - the dot is not very visible in the mueller in bright light. But you do get the magnification when you need it. And the dot makes it very easy to get on target.

Hahah - i hope you're not hunting with a flashlight bud :)

You're thinking of bear and such i'd guess - short answer, not quite. Again - better than a regular scope by miles, better than most iron sight options, not quite as fast as a 1X red dot. Again- with a bit of practice - it's close.

Different, but do-able. That's great, just what I was hoping to hear. :)

No, I'm not hunting by flashlight, I just want to be able to make sure I'm not BEING hunted! :p

Thanks Bud.
