What is the best compact hunting rifle scope when on a budget($400 to $700) like 1-5 or 1-7 or something similar! I have a leupold vari-x III 1-5 that is alright but not super happy with it....
what do like and why?
Thank you

Personnally, I like Leupold scopes with ones inch tubes. I have some older Vari-X II and Vari-X III, as well as the newer VX-2, VX-3 and VX-3i in various magnifications. I also have an older (dicontinued) Bushnell Elite 4200 in 1.5-6X36 that is quite nice.

A few manufacturers used to have compact scopes in their lineup (Burris and Leupold come to mind), but the current trend seems to be towards more powerful scopes with bigger maintubes.

What is it you do not like about the Leupold Vari-X III in 1.5-5X20?

Where and how are you using the scope? What is your priority... weight? If you want a really light scope and are using it at closer range, the Leupold FX-II 2.5x20 Ultralight is only 6.5 ounces and will hold up to big bore recoil.

Sorry the Leupold is a VX-3i 1.5-5x20.... not that I don’t like it really just that I find it not as “stable”( probably not the right term) than my vortex or my bushnell elite 3200, maybe it as more parlax than I’m use too...

I hunt mainly moose, most of the time from a canoe, on rivers and lakes, weight is not a real issue even if it is nice to have something light but I rather have something good and reliable than something lite... it would be for
My new rifle, Ruger no1 in 9.3x62 and will be use for bisons and moose! I want something compact being my main criteria!! That is what I like about the Leupold vx-3i 1.5-5x20

can't go wrong with a used Leupold M8 6X!

Redfield used to make some nice one inch small size variable scopes
1-7 comes to mind I would go used in exc condition, as a lot of them are used on 22 rifles

Personally think the VX-3 1.5-5X20mm is just about perfect on that rifle... but a little bit "more perfect" would be the VX-3 1.75-6X32mm "IF" you can find one.

Hmmm ok will have to look around!! One inch tube is preferable since the rifle comes with 1” rings!!

The pictured No.1's wear Leupold VX-3 2.5-8X36 and VX-3 1.5-5X20, both mounted with a #4 offset ring in the rear position. The M77 carbine at the bottom of the other picture wears the VX-3 1.75-6X32... it always amazes me when shooting the two scopes side by side how noticeably more magnified the top end of the 1.75-6X is when compared to the 1.5-5X... the reverse is true at the bottom end of these two scopes... considering that it is only a 1X increase on top and .25X difference on the bottom.

What model is that ziess for $500?

That is the Terra... IMO the Leupold VX-3 is a better scope. I have had two Terra's and used a few more, back to Leupold for me. If you want to spend the extra coin, the Conquest is a good scope.
