Rifle Setup Won't Centre

Good Day Everybody,

I recently purchased a new Savage 110FP in 300 Win Mag from one of the fine sponsors (Frontier Firearms).

I mounted it with two piece weaver steel bases (can't find a picatinny rail for savage long action here), burris xtr rings, and a bushnell elite 4200 6-24x50 tactical scope.

I put it together the same way I have done my other 5 rifles but for some reason I can not get the scope to centre. At 25 yards i have maxed out my left windage and I am still approximately 4-6 inches right.

The only funky thing that I have had to do is turn the mounts to each other. Instead of the mounts going:

<-- PORT <---
they are
--> PORT <--

This is because the burris xtr rings are so wide and they would not fit on the scope body while on the single slotted weaver mount.

I was thinking about turning the rings the other way hopefully moving the sight to the left and then being able to centre using the windage knob. But i'm not sure if that is too hacky.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing. Any Ideas?

Rene

I can offer you Burris Sig Zee rings w/inserts that will allow you to center the windage on your scope.

Farrell one piece MOA base for the LA are available too.

Likely a serious mismatch of rings to bases. The Sig rings will resolve this problem. Reversing the rings may put bending forces through the scope tube which is not healthy to the scope.

PM if interested.

Snug the base screws up lightly, then tap then with wood block and a hammer in the direction you want them to move... then tighten the screws and hammer them over some more... then try the rings again.

If that does not work Jerry's idea will or a friendly gunsmith...

Idea is to use the extra space in the base screw holes to help you move the bases in the direction you need.

Problem is will the rings be true? Will the bases slip in time from the recoil?

Now you get into lapping the rings (not my idea of a good time) and other ways to get that scope body in line. Remember that lapping rings is a one shot deal.

I gave up along time ago trying to force the rings to line up. With the Burris Sig. rings, all the misalignment is taken up with the plastic bushings. There is no bending forces on the scope tube and the rings are not ruined.

You can also shim the scope for elevation and/or windage to best maximize the scope adjustment. If assembled properly, they also never come loose.

Best rings I have used and inexpensive which is just icing on the cake.

As an extra bonus, if you ever need to remove the scope w/rings from the rifle, when you reinstall, the POI will shift very little if any at all :)

On mine I use Millet Angle Lock windage adjustable rings on weaver bases

using the bore sighter you can center the cross hair with the rings leaving you full windage adjustment

Also just check how well the barrel is floating in the stock I had to do little work on mine

All the best :)

Thanks for the help everybody!

I took the setup apart and brought out the calipers. I measured the ring bases and as it turns out one side was significantly larger than the other. I turned the rings around and what do you know, they appear to be centered.

I'm really excited that it was the rings, and to those who may have the same ID10T error, the burris xtr rings install with ring base locking nut on the ejection port side.

Thanks Again!
