Rifle vs. Shotgun Hunting

Have you considered a savage 24v in 30-30/20 gauge? The come up in the $500 range occasionally (used). Now adays with leverevelution ammo, the 30-30 can shoot to 200 yds

Git a .270, mount a decent scope on it, and sight it in for 200 yards. Check to see where it prints at different ranges, under different conditions, and record those observations. Then practice, practice, practice at ranges from 25 to 300 until you can go hunting.

love the meat too

I'm in it for the game meat, not so much the trophy.

In that case, get well equipped.

If you’re in it for the best meat, get a bow and hunt bambie. In most provinces, during bow season only, you can take any deer, and the youngest ones taste the best.

Also, get a shot gun and go small bird hunting. Woodcock and partridge are mighty tasty early in the hunting season.

Last, but not least, since you are in the prairies and more than likely going to be making long shots for those deer, I would suggest anything that carries well and shoots far. You might want to start with a 243, as has already been suggested in previous posts. Less recoil and easy to handle for a beginner.

Enjoy, be careful.

For southern Sask I would find a nice flat shooting medium sized rifle in the 270 or 7mm range and go hard, don't feel you NEED a magnum by others opinions, accuracy trumps all!!

WHAT???? What ever happened to the 7mm-08 or 308 short action recomendation? My vote goes there! and now with the 260 added! Kelly???

there is no advantage. a rifle is the proper tool for the job.

however, for people who are limited to a shotgun-only season, modern rifled shotguns are the next best thing.

Not entirely true. Where I hunt, using buckshot doubles my hunting area, since it lets me hunt closer to houses. I've shot my last two deer with buckshot, and will likely continue to, until my spot dries up.

I think a slug is also nice for black bear hunting - you're guaranteed a massive entry wound.

Shotgun for moose

Depends on terrain, if your hunting deer or moose in heavy cover a shotgun is not a disadvantage, if you hunt the open long range then a rifle is better. Give us a little more info when you want opinions and advise.
Shotguns for moose in BC is not legal, not sure about the other provinces?
