Rimfire scope?

I hate picking optics... they are f'in expensive, there are TONNES of them and I can't tell the god damn difference between any of em :mad:

Lately I've been upgrading my garbage to Leupold... mainly because I dunno what else to buy...

Anyway, what does a guy put on rimfire rifles? I have a 17hmr and I would like something reasonably high powered, like maybe a 12 or 14 power.

I'm also thinking about buying a .22lr for chickens and stuff... what do I put on it?

I want something good but I don't want to spend a fortune.

Yeah, I've been looking at them now and have no idea what to pick. Been looking at the Redfield and Vortex is the last hour.

So what's the difference between a 'rimfire' scope and a regular scope? Just the parallax setting? Doesn't look like the redfield Revolution or the Vortex Diamondback line are considered 'rimfire' scopes...
 
The difference is just the parallax setting, which is very important, and rimfire scopes tend to be smaller.

For your .17 I would get something in the 4-14 power range with an adjustable objective. I won't offer a suggestion because I haven't researched that type of scope for awhile.

For a general hunting .22 look no futher than the Leupold 2-7x28mm rimfire. It's super small and light and the cat's ass for a general hunting .22, it can be had for $200. I have it on a CZ 452 and it is a deadly gopher gun.

That's kinda what is suspected. I definitely won't be going with an AO scope... I really hate AO. Side parallax is the way to go but it comes at a price. Than again, a standard rifle scope is probably fine for the .17 since it's useful out to 150-200 yds.

Thanks, I'll check out the Leupold rimfire scope. That in the VX-1 line?
 
Picked up a Leupold VX1 2-7x28 Rimfire and put it on my 10/22. So far its great, nice and compact, finger click adjustments(new VX1's only)

Yep, it weighs like 6.5 ounces and it is quite clear.

It's nice having something small and compact on a .22:

I think 12x is good for an HMR, but I struggle to see the bullet holes @ 100 yards with it. Anything in the 14-16x range is ideal in my opinion. Since it sounds like you're wired like I am...I think you like direct answers, so I'll tell you exactly what I use. :)

On my .22WMR...and I'd have little hesitation putting one on a .17HMR, a Mueller APT. I'd prefer the side adjustment... but a really nice pc. of glass for the money. This is where I got mine and the exact model;

On my .22lr~I just got a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x40 AO and I really like it. I take some comfort in the warranty mind you, but the scope is nice and not overly huge/heavy. I think 12x is the outer limit of magnification req. for a .22, a 3-9x would serve 99% of .22 shooters I'm sure. This is the exact model/reticle;

The nicest scope I own is sitting on my .223, but it would be a decent choice for an HMR if you wanted to throw some more $ into that set-up. This is the exact scope/reticle;

I keep seeing people suggest that Leupold Rimfire model, and the Nikon P22...neither of which I've held or looked through. If I were setting up a gun right now, I'd make a point of taking a peek through both before buying anything.

What sold me on the VX1 Rimfire was definitely the size/weight. These are very compact and have a shorter eye relief for reduced LOP 22's. Most of the other scopes I considered were longer/heavier with greater eye relief meaning I could't mount them far enough forward on my 10/22 to make them comfortable/work properly,

Thats a 452 Varmint

maximum magnification is a function of distance and target size. I've had 24x on rimfires and airguns because it was what was required for that size target.

If you find yourself running your scopes at max all the time then its worth getting something with more mag. That said it takes time and effort to learn how to shoot more than 12x standing off-hand.

Great rifles, if you get one install a yodave trigger kit. $18 gets you a great trigger at whatever weight you want.

I thought the factory triggers were supposed to be pretty good. How is the accuracy from the CZs? Is it comparable to a savage?
