Round choice for .308 in 7.62x51 rifle

Hi guys,

I have an Israeli K98 chambered in 7.62x51 that I was going to use this year for moose and whitetail. Any recommendations for a factory .308 hunting round? This K98 has tight headspace so I am not worried about that, more the cup pressure issue with hot factory ammo. I am not handloading quite yet so I am looking for factory ammo. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, :D
 
tons of options, I'd go for a do-all load that can handle a moose but will still expand on a deer.

here's some to consider :

Norma 165 gr. Swift A-Frame #17612
Norma 180 gr. Nosler Partition #17635



I'd avoid Hornady Light Magnum ammo and Federal High Energy. High pressure stuff and it's not needed over usual hunting ranges. You also might be able to find some Speer Nitrex ammo that was discontinued a couple years ago. 165 or 180 gr. Grand Slams would work well. Not sure if gun stores in Edmonton stock Black Hills Ammo, but they make a 168 gr. Barnes XLC-BT load.

pretty hard to go wrong with anything I've listed though.

The 165 for deer, and the 180 for moose and you ca't go far wrong.

if you use one load it sure keeps life simple. moose can get pretty big too.

Nope. They work well, and reliably. Which is more than can be said for some of cheap junk people use. Use the best you can, the 165s do well on deer. They were, and still are my personal 308 load of choice.
 
I mostly handload, but I've found Winchester 180gr Silvertips (Big Game ones, not varmint!) to be quite accurate in just about any .308 Win I've fired them from and I've successfully anchored several moose using them in my pre-reloading days. Federal used to load a 180gr Nosler Partition as well. An excellent hunting load!
 
Thanks a lot for the info guys. I think I am going to stay with one of the 165's on your list Todd, to keep the pressure down. Plenty for deer and I'll just have to take a well aimed shot if I spot a moose. Much oblige!! :D

WHY?????
That's exactly what I'm using.
unfortunately, they don't group the same (in my rifle). POI is about 4" diff.

but I'll kust have to use the heavier ones first, and readjust the scope before changing.

if the pressures are an issue, the what about 30-06 in a Mauser action - wich these loads are diplicating.
 
"...have to take a well aimed shot..." You'll need a well aimed shot for a deer too. You'll have to try as many brands of factory ammo as you can to find the one or two that shoot best out of your rifle. The 165's will cover both moose and deer. But not moose and squirrel, Boris.

Wish I was the 99 is a tight bore(and has one of the weakest extractors known to mankind)the Army surplus 7.62X51 is just too much for it!!

It does like the PMP 308 though! You got to shoot what your rifle likes!!!

It likes .308 win but not 7.62X51~~~

i've shot 7.62 ivi surplus through my 99 for years- time was that was all i could get- must be his 99- i had the headspace cked and mine's somewhere between the go and long- so it's fine for 7.62 -

We shoot surplus all the time in our 308s up here, including the 99 Savage!

Hummmm I guess I had better check my out my chamber,It might be blown out !!! Maybe I had oil in it,lots of things to check out now(dang I sold off all my surpplus)!!

But I think it was porch or South Afr !!!

get it cked with both 7.62 AND 308 guages- they are slightly different-with the 7.62 being a little longer- the guys with the m14s and m1as get this done all the time to see if they can fire both 308 and 7.62 or 7.62 only- it only takes a minute or 2 extra
