Round choice for .308 in 7.62x51 rifle

Thanks T-star and others I will clean the chamber(haven't yet) and make sure it is dry and try another 7.62 nato in it!!! If you have to disasemble the bolt to gage it,then I'm screwed cause I don't know how to remove the bolt from the 99!!!

I have to admit the bore looked so good in it that I never thought to scrub the chamber!!!

I come here because I can be over-looked or any dumbassed post I make, and you guys are the best at helping out another Gunnut!!!

Thanks Bob :)

to take the bolt out , you have to get a real long shanked slotted type screwdriver(i'm talking about 2 feet long) and take the buttstock out-take off the buttcap,( there should be 2 screws- phillps head- then go down the hole with the long screwdriver and unscrew it- the buttstock then pulls off to the rear- to do the headspace thing, there are 3 guages that look like dummy shells- the last ones i saw looked like chromed dummies( i think brownells has them ) but make sure you get 7.62 and not 308 winchester or both- a go guage, a no-go guage, and a field- you'll only use these the odd time, unless you're a smith, so i'd take to a smith that has these and pay the fee to get it cked- should be a nominal fee- it's like a 2 minute job- drop it in, close the bolt- as far as the screwdriver, goes, you should be able find one in a tool store or get a blacksmith to make one for you- get a piece of half inch or better welding rod and get someone to heat it and hammer it flat into a slotted type screwdriver on one end- you don't have to really torque on it- any blacksmith with a forge should be able to do it- just heat the end cherry red or better and then hit it with a hammer an equal number of strokes on both sides, and into a water or oil quench- you may want to put an oversized handle on it too- yyou'll find you use that screwdriver a lot when you really want to clean it- oh yea, and if you have the rotary magazine, do NOT dissassemble the magazine

the guage reflects the dimensions of the chamber.
Yes, the 7.62x51 is alittle longer.
However, the rounds are pretty much the same.

now if one reloads, that would make a difference, as one as to reconsider reloading from 308/7.62x51 and cross-using them in each other.

my 2c

Yeah I got one of those two foot long sloted screw drivers(I use it to change out the tank bolts on toliet tanks)! Matter of fact I changed out the steel butt plated(cracked stock) for a newer model C or so with rubber butt stock!

Thanks guys!!!
